O.S. plugs are fine. Some believe they are actually better. Another good thing is that they are a little cheaper too.

Last weekend I did an on track oilbath break-in of a new MAX RP9.5, the one with the black/gold head. This one has a different conrod which I was told made by Hudy, and with probably a serial number als also saw the number 4.8 on the rod. I did not take the whole engine apart to meassure it but it looks like MAX is now using an 4.8mm crank pin. If so, then that will make the new MAX rod not useable for Nova engines.

I placed an order with Novarossi Direct, the USA distributor, a few weeks ago and my order was, inexplicably, canceled. My guess is the factory has shut down for good, or is about to. Shame really. I'm not longer using Nova motors, and haven't for a couple of years, but their exhaust springs and gaskets were the best ones I've ever used.

Hmmm..... shorter. I believe the OS rod is also about 1mm shorter and has the right hole dimensions for the Novarossi piston pin and crank pin. Changing a sleeve to get it lower is no problem for me so when I do need rods I can go to OS with a small modification to the sleeve.
But yes, as MAX also has older Nova based engines I will believe he still can provide the rods. |
About the difference in length between the R4/18 and the Max 07999 conrod, I think it is due to the difference in the bore x stroke of these two engines: With the engines that uses the R4/18 rod (eg the Mephisto and Mito 9) at 15.88x17.60 mm, while the Max RP9 is at 16.26x16.80 (same as Mito WC that uses the r4/17 conrod). Whereas the OS bore x stroke is 16.08 X17.20mm

Bore and stroke has nothing to do with the needed length of the rod. Novarossi has used the R-rod for all their engines for a long time, Also the P, O and C rods have the same hole distance but a different crank pin dimension.

Yes, but we are talking about nothing more than 1mm on a length of about 30mm. A shorter rod will indeed give a larger angle but it will also give a faster compression build up near TDC and a higher pressure under the piston. But I think the most important of the choice to go different is aftersales.

I saw this on a Facebook group. Anyone know more about this?
A few of my contacts in the industry came up with some big new. Novarossi as we knew it is gone. No more Italian Novas. A US company has bought the rights, and some of the machines and tooling, so they will now be under a new name and very possibly Made in the USA. |
