History of the Nitro Engine

Been looking online, and can't find much history on Nitro engines. Who was the first and were they originally made for R/Cs? I'm interested in the development process.

If I was a betting man, they started out on "string cars". I think that's what they called em.....

Video

This is not Nitro Engines but its a very cool vid and i guess sheds light on how / why Nitro engines became

I hope a few of you that have not seen it enjoy it as much as i did

There is also some interesting reading on Wikipedia , First glow engine was made in 1947 by an American

I personally found this surprising as i thought they came out in the late 70's / early 80,s

I had a fuel powered Cox dragster in 1969
powered by 0.049" Cox glow engine

how awesome that they used to start by turning the rear wheels! How did that transform to bump boxes? How great would it be if the marshal could just re-fire your car if it flamed out?

I had a cox .049 tether funny car and the body was painted red and blue with a spider man theme. That car was a blast and you just flipped the wheel and it would start and you just let it run down its tether it was such a hoot to run!!! Michael

let your clutch bell bearings seize up and you will be able to lol! a long time ago when i didnt know what the hell was going on and i had clutch bell bearings that were toast my truggy would come into corners and start cutting out well one time it actually cut out down the strait and because there was still energy conducting the glow plug was still glowing and it re started itself haha i didnt know what the heck happened till someone i was with noticed it to and we had a laugh over it!

back on topic that video was a 'hoot' to watch, my how the days have changed!

71 MPH rail cars! It worked just fine for them. Seems technology went backwards instead of forward. Maybe those cars cut out if you applied brakes? I don't know but how awesome would it be for first time Nitro users to just have to spin the tire with your hand to start the car? Man I almost quite the damn hobby as a newbie just from those damn pull starts :D

mtpocketsracing 11-18-2014 04:32 PM
