140 or 240???
I was running mine today as well in buggy and it was great. I had a chance to practice with it last weekend and it seemed a little soft on the bottom for my liking. I gave Monty a call who assured me that there is no shortage of bottom end, I consider myself a pretty good tuner but it appears even experienced tuners make mistakes every once in a while lol. I pulled the motor out and checked the idle gap and realized I had done what I've told other racers to avoid. I had tuned in a overly large idle gap on my first few tanks of break in and never properly adjusted the low speed needle. So even though the motor ran well it wasn't anywhere close to the full potential on the bottom end. The new layout at our local track for the Jconcepts Spring Nitro Nationals has a couple set's that require sharp turns with short run ups to large jumps. One in particular has about 8-10 ft of run up before jumping uphill to land on a table top, with the incorrect idle gap setting I would either have to swing wide or I would chassis slap the rear on the edge of the table top. After correcting the idle gap setting and tuning the bottom wooohooo don't overshoot it lol. For a 7 port this motor has a really strong bottom with mileage to boot and on the straight it just screams, for anyone who compares this to a toro or any other 7 port motor you really should give one a try for yourself because this completely breaks the mold. I'm running a standard edition X7 with temps in the 220's and I know I could lean it out but I really do not need anymore as it's sooo fast already, watching the extreme versions of the X7 in truggy is equally impressive. |
I also ran the x7 extremes today at the jcon nats in truck and buggy with run times in excess of ten min. I love the all around power too top and bottom are perfect for truck and insane in buggy that combined with my mods from Monty Houston of Houston engine service these motors are awesome I run mine about 250 and it makes killer run time and great power. Put it in if ya wanna win!

I got a little over 600cc through my stock X3 today (nearing the 1/2 gallon total mark) and it's starting to show some power! I like it so far!
Took this pic today...this is after a little over a 1200cc of Powermasters 30% through the X3.....hmmm.....It just rubs off so I'm not really sure what to think... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...0527011401.jpg |

It looks as if it was broke in at a very low temp. Im not familiar with the powermaster fuel but im am fairly certain that is from unburned fuel and oil. If i were guess i would say that it was broken-in around the 150 degree area or lower.

Thanks for the response! To be 150* or lower wouldn't the engine have to be blubbering rich and barely running?

An engine will idle at very low temps but oil packages in fuels will not burn off and exit the engine below certain temperatures, some fuels recommend not even using their fuel for break in. the oil package will "varnish" the inside of the engine and actually make the piston/sleeve fit feel tighter as you run more fuel through it when in actuality it is wearing the other components out even faster than it should be doing so.
Synthetic oil based fuels are not the best for break ins, a fuel with mostly castor oil will be your best bet , I personally use and recommend byrons gen2 race 3000 30% nitro 11% oil, I have had great luck with it . We say to break in your engine between 190°-210° for a reason Hope this helps |

This is going in the Fusion X and the HES thread … sorry for the double post but it pertains to both.
After talking with Monty a week ago I ordered the X7 XTR along with his tuning service and bench break in. The engine arrived Friday and I prepped it for the remainder of the break-in Sat (heat cycles). I noticed the little things like the bands on the carb boot and barrel, nice detailing. The thing fired up with no problem and would idle for days. After around 4 tanks I went to the track for the remainder of the process. It fired up without help and was making good power but did have a few times where the pinch shut it off on the straight … it soon loosed up a little and high speed passes were now possible. The engine makes great power throughout the rpm range and screams on top. For a 7 port the bottom is very good. With about 20 tanks it is making well over 10 min in truggy with the 2084/21 combo. The carb is everything I have come to expect from Nova … best out there by far. I am extremely pleased with the purchase and more so with the service from Monty. You see, I called Monty today about ordering another just like it for buggy. Instead of just taking the order he steered me away for the tuned version to the regular XTR because he felt it was going to be to much for buggy … total honesty that has gained him another repeat happy client. A+ for the engine and service. X7 HES XTR 7.5 Insert 2084/21 OD 97T OD Speed 30% - Phil |
