The 2084 or 9853 and the 21 seems to be a good pipe for the stocker but I like the 9901/20 after I do my work on it. I have been getting 12+ minutes on a tank driving normally and usually pit between 9-11 minutes depending on track, tune and setup. The biggest thing that engine design needed was a intake timing change, exhaust port timing change and the crank filled. Playing around with the timing and fill will yield different results but a basic fill puts you in a good ballpark and what I also do and have had great results is making the satalite ports and main exhaust port open at the same time as it yields the most possible exhaust surface area at the start of blowdown giving the engine the best possible low end response. I think alot of the soft bottom was because the satalites were opening a few degrees before the main port and it was bleeding down before it had enough surface area to blowdown and scavage correctly giving the engine that soft feel but with the right changes, it goes from being a ho hum to one of my favorites.

my crank is not filled....053 didnt like this engine.....086 on short manifold is best conventional pipe...............transfers are cut, boost is cut, backplate is cut, button is cut..and of course exhaust cut............I have tested all the Nova pipes now and settled on a lowly OFNA 086, .....But in all fairness I have to run the Nova pipes on a shorter header...so far this engine wants to run a very short header....Even on a shorty the bottom end is unreal.....

nope , you are overshimmed for the 25% you are running ona broken in engine already

i would drop shimming to .70mm and use 30% in your case of higher elevation , requires either a .20mm shim or a .10mm shim

savannahmick 08-24-2011 05:02 PM

When should I pull small shim in my R21 Nitrotec or just leave it?

I just recently bought new R21 and I am really liking the performance so far with almost a gallon thru it (30% ODSPBlend plus 2% Bryons Lube Booster). But I am not sure when and if I should remove shim that manual says to remove after break-in. I did use the heat cycle and the motor is really coming around and running first real race this weekend and I will leave the shim in for this race so I don't have to tune it again right now. Should I pull it once I pass the 1 gallon mark or wait until it's had 2 gallons thru it? Also should I add a percent or two of lube booster (castor oil) after break-in is finished to my fuel if I can only get Odonnell Speed Blend 30%/7.5% oil content? One more thing I have noticed a VERY small amount of fuel coming out behind flywheel from front bearing this is normal as long as it's not alot and will hold tune right? I know I ask alot of questions and THANKS for all the info/help that I have recieved here!

I bought a bonito and right now I am having trouble keeping it running. I set the carb to the factory settings and it shipped with the blue venturi. I'm in el Paso tx. Alt is around 3500 ft temp upper 90's durning the day and mid 80's at night 30% fuel. It loads up like an sob. I am thinking of going with a bigger venturi in the carb.

put in a hotter plug a 77t or 87t odonnell plug is perfect. factory seting on the low set needle is to rich to run so lean a bit there until you get a nice idle.
always heat your engine and put it on the ground and start running in with short blips of the throttle heating and cooling cycles is the best way imo just follow the run in guide in the engine section that engine will take nearly 2 gals to run in so take it easy and dont lean to soon.
cheers:)
ps just run a 7mm carb insert

Izekael 08-25-2011 04:16 AM

Am I reading the chart wrong. I would of thought a colder plug for the higher ambient temp

Break in is different

His advice is spot on

Get hotter plug, either odonnell 97t, 77t or novarossi c5tgc, dont be afraid to lean the needles a little to get it to run right and maintain run in temps

Factory settings are fairly rich and I install 8mm venturi for break ins , more air , richer settings means more lubrication ;)

Izekael 08-25-2011 11:14 PM

I got it fired up. Hs is still rich. Ls is just ever so slightly below flush but it sounds angry is that ok.

I also added a return spring on the carb is that ok

Flip it 08-27-2011 08:43 PM

I have just run a couple of tanks through the Bonito with the 2096/29 combo in an RC8T. Engine is still on the rich side as it has been re nipped by RC renew( 10 tanks prior to tunning ). I had tried a couple of other pipes one of which was the 9901/29. The new pipe has it all over the combos that I tried. One of the lads that I race with was blown away by the difference that the new pipe has made. Unsure of run times but will post some more feed back after next weekends race

I like your description (angry ) thats because this engine is a 7port and has lots of balls just make sure there is plenty of smoke coming out on throttle you should be fine keep and eye on temps as a reference say 100c or 190f there abouts remember you are running in your engine so no full throttle or holding high throttle for long periods of time just blip nice and smooth:nod: over the course of the run in your engine tune will change slightly so adjust accordingly and be conservative on the hsn, just keep going with this and your engine should give you lots of life . oh and like houston said keep your temps up running in a a cold engine can do more damage:nod:
cheers
carb spring is ok I find because the carb is plastic you can get wear over time where the spring touches the carb housing so I just use rubber hair ties they are very cheap and do a good job without any damage if you need more pull just use two

air8 08-28-2011 08:20 AM

Head shim question.

High air temps and high humidity. Is it advisable to add a shim under the head button? Add maybe a .10 shim.

Schmitty 08-28-2011 06:16 PM

i just bought a nova +4. will a sirio 2057 pipe work on it?

Izekael 08-29-2011 02:18 AM

I got the bonito broke-in and tuned. This thing is a beast. Going to see if I can get it on the track tomorrow or tuesday for some practice runs. I think I am going to be very satisfied with this mill.

What does this equation equal... torn carb boot + bad leaking front bearing + high elevation + 100 degree weather

Chris Peralta 08-30-2011 01:06 PM

My guess is a 300 degree engine temp

an engine that will change tun every second of every lap , have no bottom end or top end and will blow up very soon;)

savannahmick 08-30-2011 08:23 PM

One more question about tune and R21 Nitrotec. Switched fuels.

I had to use Odonnell SP Blend 30% to break-in (1gallon) and now I got my Bryons 30% 11% case. Anyway I wanted to tune motor to fuel this afternoon and had hard time trying to decide which way to go with needles. I richened top about 2hrs of the bat and top end seems good but I am having a time getting idle to smooth out it's tough because it seems to load up and rev a little when I get off throttle and then drop but it's a little unstable up and down like it's lean but if i richen it stalls .5 mm gap idle. Tons of smoke on bottom when accel. Temps are low while running 210f and 190f idle if I had alot of time I could figure it out but working late and racing early Saturday. I didn't really want to use Odonnell but I kind of started liking it despite low oil content still had pinch after 1 gallon after two tanks of Bryrons metal pinch is gone same running temps with both fuels. Other than idle unstable motor runs great and will idle forever. How tight should the pinch bolt be I hope I didn't tighten to much.(air leak?) Any ideas or help , Thanks!

Sounds more like your LSN is a little rich. When you go back to idle after being on throttle, there is some extra fuel that it is consuming and hence the higher revs before going back to normal idle.

When you richened the LSN, you are causing it to bog and stall. Lean out the LSN. If you give it some gas and go back to idle, it may rev for an extended period of time. This is good. Then adjust your idle stop screw accordingly.

As you lean the LSN, you may need to richen the HSN, but since you already richened the HSN 2 hours and assuming you have a good top end with a trace of smoke at WOT, my guess is that your HSN is probably good.

SEF 08-30-2011 09:44 PM

Also make sure you don't have any air leaks or a torn carb boot. These things could cause unsteady idle.

Novarossi 2011 1/8th IC Off-road European Championship race report

Robert Battle took the win with his Bonito 7xlbs. Robert had a very cleaver strategy for the final: he was the only driver refuelling around 9 minutes; this allowed the spanish ace to pit-stop one time less than his challengers and took the win.

Jerome Aigoin took the pole position with his PLUS 4 BTTS, led the main final for almost 30 minutes and took a very good 2nd place.

Configurations

a real prick to start and when you do get it running you will have a crappy idle and tune will be impossible to achieve so throw on a new boot and install a front bearing , I put a small cable tie around my boot just in case throw in a new plug:D then retune should be sweet after that:nod:

crittertoo 09-02-2011 10:31 AM

I recently got a Bonito XLB. Ran about 2 gallons of Cosmos 30% fuel with a Nova 6 plug in 1 week. And I have been chasing the idle ever since. I have not reshimed, she is still at 2 X 0.3mm and 1 X 0.2mm.

Problems I faced : -

1) erratic idle and flames out easily
2) When she is at operating temp (125-135 C), she gets difficult to start. I have to open the fuel lid, insert the glow starter and only then will she starts. And after she starts, I need to gun her to clear the bottom. If I do not gun her, she bogs and flame out. I know i need to lean the LSN to clear this, but at 130 C, I still need to lean the LSN? LSN is about flush, looking directly at her, she is about 3-4 o'clock.

I guess 1 and 2 are related but I have been chasing those 2 for days and nothing that I do seems to get me closer to the perfect tune.

No air leakage. Pressure hose is about 10 inches. Clean air filter.

Anyone knows where I can get Nova shims part no 03005xl, 03003xl and 03001xl?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

thanks

I can get you some if you want but all you need to do on that engine its pull the .20mm

Xl stroke equals different shimming

Hello my fellow rc brothers. Does anybody have any experience with one of the newer P5xlt's? I am not happy with the latest generation of OS motors and am looking for something that I can depend on, and is priced right. I would love a Bonito or Plus 4 but they are out of my price range, the P5 fits the bill. My main concern is mileage. Will a P5 with the appropriate pipe, header, etc pull the the magic 10 min pit. I know there a bunch of variables but for the most part I run on a medium indoor track and am pretty smooth on the throttle. I know novarossi's are solid I just left them for a while due to a bad experience with the first run of plus 4's. Thoughts or input?

nick64merc 09-02-2011 01:51 PM

Monty would you recomend removing that shim on any of the bonito's after they are broke in?

I would recommend .65mm total but .60mm would be just fine , engine runs much better

HOUSTON....YOU ARE THE MAN...pulled the 0.2 shim today (total shims of 0.6mm). Bonito was purring like a cat...low end was awesome and the high was very pretty decent.

At operating temps 130-140c, she still is a bit difficult to start, i still had to open the fuel lid to get her started, and gun her to clear her (i've just put in a new nova 6 plug). It wasn't as bad as compared to when I had the 0.8mm total head shims on.

Any idea what does that mean ? My interpretation of this symptom is the LSN is still rich, therefore flooding the carb, but at temp of 130 - 140 C, I am hesitant about leaning the LSN.

Houston, I would love to hear your diagnosis on the above matter...:)

Thanking you so much for all your assistance.

5 turns out on lsn from bottomed out and 3.5 on hsn is pretty close

koreanassasom 09-05-2011 07:59 PM

me and my son ran out Bonitos pre run or the first time this weekend in truggy. my son got 1st in the amain 5 laps on the field and i got 3rd 5 laps back lol. we have identical trucks and setups except he is running a od 97t plg and i ran the stock nova plug the engine came with. out carb settings were identical flush on bottom and 1/2 turn higher then flush on top. we ran the nova 9853 with 41020 long maniold engines ran and idled fantastic all day. but my sons engine was about 305 all day long and i was around 275 all day long is this because of the plug? we were both getting plenty of smoke and excess oil on idle so i left them be is this ok temps? thanks

rageworks 09-05-2011 09:38 PM

305 degrees! Wow! That engine must have been running faster
than an ape with it's ars on fire. I don't think that the engine is fully
broke-in yet. Get some more fuel through that engine before he pushes
it that hard again.
