Steven,
Your welcome. Light liner scratches honed out easy, and light-medium tightness has been the most prefered with most engine models i've referenced this years feedback/results.

preheat is best

Although you shouldn't find nearly as tight as was new, preheat before each start.

I went a tad lighter than my medium tightness both your sets. I suggest richen high + low needle setting 1/2 turn and Heatcycle 4-5 easy tanks on the track easy at half throttle max, cooling between tanks, and you should be ready to start race tune.

Every now + then I get a stuborn sleeve requiring me open + close sleeve bore a few times to hit that "Sweet Spot" resulting a great seal ;) Glade your pleased with the results my work.

Thank You!!!!

Hey RayA,

What would you recommend doing if the piston head has a little scuff on it? Is it worth repinching the engine, or will there still be performance issues?

RayA 10-08-2010 11:21 AM

Hope this scuff isnt a chunk

My view of a "scuff" is a surface finish condition less severe than minor pitting, that which with my process improving surface finish conditions would not be operant after my servicing. Please note, we need to be on the same page here and your "scuff" I will hope is not a "chunk" in piston. None the less, ship the set to me and should your set be un serviceable at my incoming inspection I will consult with you by email. Feel free to call, text or email me with any further questions....or just post here this RCTECH thread.

Kind regards,

From the pics illustrating side piston damages there is no doubt surface finish damages of the sleeve liner. Unless the liner scratching hones out the set is garbage. You are welcome to ship the set to me to inspect further. First clean sleeve bore well yourself and decide if the scratches appear shallow or deep. Light scratching will hone out and the set will re-lap in; Deep liner scratches will NOT.

Billy,
The 821b was a piece a cake, cleaned up with a 2+1/2 tenths resizing. Now the FMS is the one I need to hear about. You see the note on invoice - it requred some serious EXTRA ATTENTION with reconditioing process, before streightening out. Please keep me posted.

MadBrad,
It truely depends on the wear factor, surface finish condition, resulted geometrical sleeve-case fit, along with engine model you are refering. I always note on invoice what I see each engine model piston + sleeve set recieved and serviced. With out seeming short here, I have seen some not worthy "one" reconditining-resizing service, with other repeat customers getting 2 and even (not often) as many "three" light resizings the engines life.

Hi ray, i sent off my piston, sleeve and button for the Nova Mega .12 today.
I forgot to include a note with it asking for you to give your thoughts on the wristpin and conrod....(which i have ordered new anyway).
I't will be interesting to see how long it takes to get to you as it's my first international posting.

Cheers

UGPM again!4set order

NitoriousRC 10-19-2010 04:28 PM

Ray i have been wondering about what the right pinch might be for my particular motor.
To me the 'medium' is the highest level, and so part of my brain says that's the better option.

Another part of my brain says that perhaps a light-medium might be better for longevity or perhaps one more resizing after this one (if the first reconditions ok).
Your will be a better judge i am sure!

One thing for me is i think they dont make any new pistons and sleeves for my Nova Mega Sx 12 re EV1 MS anymore, so once it's done ... it's done!

I also wonder with all the different sets you have done if there is a similarity between sleeves and pistons from different manufacturers. Like roughly how many different sized sleeves are there for the .12 sized motors?

I am kinda hopeful that one day i might work out what other pistons and sleeves may work in this motor of mine.

Cheers~

Marty

Marty,
I owned a few Nova Mega SX.21 engines, along with many other 1/10 scale onrodad sedan engine models and "light-Medium" tightness is best. I personaly would prefer running even a tad lighter for onroad engine models as they spool up faster, re-breakin faster, and withy very little sacrifice of longevety I have found. Email me on a latter dat and I will reference that engine model as to other piston+sleeve sets you can run the SX case.

Dam I miss onroad racing

Hi there Ray, not sure if it is just slow freight but my sets have not turned up yet?
Have you shipped to Australia before and know roughly how long it takes?

I only ask as I placed an order with amain 2 days after you advised postal date and the amain stuff has arrived a few days ago.

Cheers and let me know what you can.

Just saw your reply to NitrousRc a few days ago, so I guess mine should have arrived a few days ago but may be held up a little.

Hi. can someone post before and after pics of a piston/sleeve??

Will the sleeve get cleaned up/polisted??

Piston/sleeve

BTW - forgot to ask, How many times can a set be resize??

Thanks

houston 10-25-2010 02:50 PM

no quams about running anything ray touches as far as his awesome resizing guys !!

dr. evil - i have yet to wear out a resized set but i think Ray recommends no more than 3 times for resizing but that really is dependant on surface finish of piston/sleeve ;)

traxxasjunky 10-25-2010 02:55 PM

+1 On Houston's Comments.

Here is a link to some pics (Before and After)on Ray's site:

http://www.rayaracing.com/image.htm

He is top notch hands down.... Have had P&S Combo's done and absolutely 0 complaints here... I have about 5 gallons on a picco right now... It still has decent pinch...
