Has anyone tried a different carb on the SS?? My friend has one and his carb sticking.or does someone have an xtra carb they would like to sell?
|
If the carb is sticking it likely is coming from a burr on the track that the idle screw rides in. Take ou the slide and use a small file to smooth up the track and it will be good as new. This is normally caused by the carb linkage pulling in an angle, to far, or just improper allignment of the carb. Hope this helps.

Thats what happened to my original one... i threw a Speed Carb on it, then when I got mine back from Steve. Swapped back.
Steve is the man if you have issues with an O product. He is all about taking care of his racers. |

Yes Steve ...does care....Got a pm on monday from him saying send that motor to him and he would fix it, even ....WAY past the 90 days given. Steve stands behind his product ....LIKE NO OTHER....
I kinda feel foolish, should have just sent him a pm, like he said... im just a pm away, if I have any issues with any of his products. Its hard getting use to customer service like his. And im not use to dealing with guys like Steve O......Steve im truly sorry for not giving you a pm first. |

I knew he's been supoer busy, but as soon as he got wind of your troubles, I had no doubt he'd be contacting you. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who stands behind both his products, and his customers, better than Steve. |

altitude change?
Anyone have experience in tuning the ss .21 in extreme altitude changes? I live at about 700ft above sea level and my race this weekend is gunna be probably close to 3600ft above sea level. Both my motors have been barely driven. Each are about tank #25-30. Went through the instructions on break in and then one race weekend. Any signs I should pay attention to besides the normal stuff?
thanks, steve |
You have to account for corrected air density. Running at those altitudes will be like me running at sea level during hot / humid conditions (lower levels of available oxygen in the air).
If you're noticing the engine sounding blubbery, it won't clear out unless you lean the heck out of it (and drive temps too high), and it starts to run better at about half tank when the temps come up, that's a good indication. I ran into this same situation in the conditions I mentioned above. I worked with Steve O on how to correct it before my race this past weekend. The only way to make power and account for less available air, without changing fuel formulation, is to do two things. 1. pump more air into the engine (bigger restrictor), and 2. increase the compression ratio (remove a head shim). I went from 2 shims to 1, and a 7mm restrictor to an 8mm. The difference in power was unbelievable. The engine ran much more freely, temps didn't climb above 230, and there was no difference in performance from the time I put it on the track until the time I finished my race. It ran fantastic right from the get-go. If you do both, immediately richen the HSN 3 hours from the prevous setting, before starting the engine. That should be very close to the same tune as before. Of course, then do a final tune using your preferred method. I'm running 30%, 87T, plug, stock air filter. There were no signs of detonation or pinging....overall, VERY good results from making these changes.

There you have it! I have never dealt with this situation and would have done the opposite since we always had to down size the jets in the carbs of atvs when they were going to a higher altitude.

Super cooool guy...He brings the oldschool vibe I remember when I was a kid at the hobby shop. I won't forget it either, I learned a valuable lesson, we never stop learning.....Thanks Steve.....
