Thanks Jo Gutierrez. I appreciate the help.
And Jaykay I hear what you are saying. Funny thing is, the guys at my track that run the mtx-4 haven't had problems with gears stripping either. It seems to be that some of have the problem and some of us don't.
I'm definitely going to try a tighter mesh though. With the 3 I ran them kind of loose. But, maybe with the 4 you have to have them tighter. I am going to keep looking at the rest of the stuff i've seen on here. Thanks.

I set my mesh very tight, almost no play but the gears still spin freely

another thing to keep in mind is once you have stripped the gears check the pinions you will see they get a rounded polished look to them and i have found that when they get this you are more prone to future stripping, i am using the steel pinions which are longer lasting and less prone to restripping gears, but as i say if you strip gears more than once and you have checked all the points of advise previously posted i highly recommend replacing the pinions and if you do steel is the go

Ok......I actually stripped a second gear this weekend running in Memphis. First one in 2 years!! The track surface is pretty rough and there is a nice little jump about 3/4's of the way down the back strait. But the real problem is, I noticed just before the main that the mesh was a bit more loose than normal but I just left it and went out and ran. I know better.... Again!!!.......(and I am telling myself too) set the second gear mesh with the first gear spur off the car. Make it tight but not bound up and then slap the first gear spur back on and don't worry if it seems a bit tight. The first time you run the car the gears will break in and will be perfect. Also as someone said a few posts before. Do make sure that your pinions are not sharp. This WILL blow spur gears know matter what else you do. Remember these cars do take maintenance . They are high performance race cars and they just don't keep running right without some work (and parts) .

your pipes spring holder (wire attached to top deck) plays a major part in the engines ability to shift. make sure that when you tighten down your engine screws, and you are setting the mesh, that the pipe wire (the one attached to the top deck) is loose, ie; the screw that olds it onto the topdeck has play.
set your engines mesh, and tighten down screws when happy with mesh, tighten the pipe piano wire thingy (yeah sorry pour vocabulary).
to double check the pipe is not interfering, hold the pipe whilst you tighten down the screw. also undo the engine chassis screws, and pay close attention to the mesh. IF YOU SEE THAT THE MESH GAP INCREASES, YOUR PIPE IS PULLING THE ENGINE AWAY!! this will cause stripping!!! RE ALIGN THE WIRE THAT HOLDS THE PIPE SO IT DOES NOT PULL THE ENGINE AWAY.
the best thing is to have the gearmesh, stay the same when you loosen the screws or at least have the mesh become tighter. i have set my pipe to make the mesh tighter (ie push the engine towards the spur gears) on my car. this eliminates gear stripping. it also increases the wear of the pinions though, but avoids stripped gears as the pipe assists in holding the engine closer to the main gears

Definitly something to consider. Bottom line is if you follow all the advise on this thread you should not strip a gear.

Guys,
Quick question is there a color differnce between the Titanium or steel pivot balls. I know that you can tell by weight, but can a picture show the visual difference?

The issue of the 2 speed housing being touched by the sway bar was one I encountered. I cut two body clip wires and glued them into the sway bar holder. That shimmed it just high enough to remain off the 2-speed.

Of all the MTX-4 owners on the planet, only a faction of them find their way to this thead. Of the people that have discussed the problem, they:
a. Haven't stripped a gear yet (knock on wood)
b. Came up with their own solution
c. Asked for help, got some advice and have stopped stripping gears
d. Gave up trying to solve the problem and got rid of their car
e. Continue to strip gears, despite anything they have read in this thread
There is only so much troubleshooting that can be done over the Internet. The rest is up to the mechanic...
As we continue to discuss this problem, I see more and more good tips being posted on how to prevent the gears from stripping. But what I've noticed, is that a lot of these tips are pretty basic - make sure things are:
1. Properly aligned
2. Properly fastened
3. Properly adjusted
4. Replaced when worn
5. Not binding up on anything
6. Not causing undue stress to cause improper alignment or adjustment
The manual doesn't help when it comes to some of these things and it's really only through experience, other racers or hanging out in here that you obtain this knowledge.
Is it possible for someone to strip a gear if items 1-6 are done? ABSOLUTELY - but it's situational and in some cases, unrepeatable.
There are no magic wands to fixing this problem - and I can understand people's frustration - but you just have to keep at it. If you can't solve the problem, maybe it's time to have someone else look at the car.

I second the motion. None of this is brain surgery. People simply ignore or don't notice something on their car that should have be repaired, replaced or realigned and then they blame the manufacturer or the car.
It's not your car it's your driving
and
It's not your car it's your mechanic
