Looking for a new car
#16
I hate these threads... people are always going to tell you what they are running is the best thing since sliced bread. I would just looking at what you can get parts locally for and what people at your local clubs are running an go for what you can get support for. Having the latest and greatest won't make you an instant winner.

Run what you know to get back into it. You'll be just as competitive with your TC3, as a bright shiny new kit. Only the kit is discontinued, all the parts are easily available through Tower/A main/on and on and on...
Buy some fresh foamies, paint up a couple of lids and get back in it.

NTC3 is still GTG for small to medium sized parking lot races. Don't need the latest and greatest for that. I've seen them with the RTR pullstart .15 still running well enough to keep up. If you need parts, I got some.
1/10 nitro onroad has gotten a lot more competitive in the larger venues since the old NTC3, NRS4 days. The budgets for the newer 1/10 cars are more than double that what it used to be before. Especially considering the additional costs of motors and pipes needed for them. You can spend $500 on the kit and another $500 on the motor and pipe alone. Definitely not quite what it used to be.
Although some may recommend a used chassis, you need to be careful not to get one that is too old or obsolete because parts availability become an issue. About three years ago I tried running a Mugen MTX3. It was a good car and despite Mugen's reputation for parts availability, I had a very difficult time finding parts for it even after asking Mugen USA. There are a lot of used MTX4s out there that can be had for cheap but check and make sure there is a viable source of parts for those near you or conveniently online before going for it.
BTW XRays are nice cars but their parts are pricey, keep that in mind.

E serpents are great. but the thing is that when a newer car comes in from serpent, the car that you have already they stop making parts for it. So when your car breaks there's no way that you could get parts. You would be lucky if someone has the parts for it. That's why I stayed with my nitro tc3.

The green car first on the grid is a ntc3.... It took the lead at the 3:08 mark against xrays..... Ntc3 is still capable...

By the way, I had lots of the wrong stuff in my Ntc3 for that race: wrong body(R5n), wrong tire size(58mm), wrong type of tire(hard gq's), wrong springs(too stiff gold)..... I have since revised the setup and lost 21grams in the process... I will be testing soon...
