Re: Strange problem with the Centax

Hi Guys, had a really strange problem with my centax today: both the metal shielded bearing were destroyed and I could hardly remove them from the bell and engine shaft  I'm not sure why this occured as the thrust bearing is A1 condition - not signs of wear or damage

I checked the centax last night and it spun beautifuly - not notching or sticking.

At the track I didn't notice anything until I span the back wheels and felt something sticking - I thought at first it was the thrust bearing, but it was due to the destroyed metal shielded bearings.

The only thing I can think of was that an Mugen guy hit the side of my car quite hard, just after I blew him away :sneaky:  but I don't see how this would have caused the two bearing to fail.

Any ideas anyone?

Mark, my guess is that the bearings failure isn't related to any bad adjustment/tuning of the centax. Sh*t just happens, Maybe one bearing was faulty and overloaded the other... you know... I don't think it will happen again with new bearings

I reckon you're right - still it was fun to show the two mugen drivers at the circuit where the speed is - they where having a careful look at the car afterwards :D

Servicing metal shielded bearing.

Related to my bearing failure, does anyone know how to service metal shielded bearings.

Fortunately I have a couple of old centax shielded bearings which I can put in my 710, but one is quite gritty. I've cleaned it in degreaser and as I can't open the bearing, I've simply soaked it in serpent bearing oil. Seems nice and smooth now, but is there a better solution?

Is your cluth-housing in its original shape, does it turn without a wobble?

At the outer edge there is a very thin spring wich you have to take out in order to get the shield out. Also remember wich way the shield got out (Up/Down)

Thanks for the tip - it turns freely without wobbling.

Cheers, Mark.

cox049, you make awesome colour combinations. Another scheme to copy ! ;)

Using the front ball diff, the drive cups somehow are narrower. The front dogbones tend to come out more easily than with a oneway front.

The FAQ !  Seek the FAQ keeper and you'll find the light !

I believe the Serpent needs to be built and set correct. Once that is done, driving the 710 should be pretty much easy.

I may be wrong but most of the time, I believe the concours event would make it compulsory to use only bodyshells that you're gonna use for racing... I may be wrong.

 I started that way. Driving the Serpent somehow made it possible for me to understand and aquire as much knowledge about RC cars. That's one of the best parts I like about RC besides driving and building the kit ! That of course does NOT include painting !
