Diff Assembly Problems

Hey guys, i'm sure this has been asked and answer, i'm sorry but i can't find it.

I am installing the diff and after putting both halves together and i tighten the screw down all the way the diff is still very loose. What am i doing wrong?

Also the ball bearing that you use on the diff (U7) is that a purple ball bearing or is that the open one that is in the bag. What i mean by the open one is the bearing that you can see the balls on both sides.

Thanks guys i look forward to your replies.

You could refer to Julius' article at mytsn for a good guide to building your diffs.

Have a look at the article above. You're suppose to set the diff loose without the pulley slipping. The diff's hardness is set by the diff collar by tightening the F12 screw with a 2.5 allen.

The U7 is suppose to be the open type bearing.

Hey cox049, is it possible to put up a pic of the new and old bumper plates? Thanks.

I too would like to see the difference between the new and old bumpers.;) Where did you get the new bumpers from?

Diff Assembly Fixed

Thanks guys, I got the diff put together right. i turn the diff sideways and kind of wiggle it around while i was screwing the screw. It feels smooth.

thanks again.

i'm now assembling the brake pads:tire:

Yup, I think the thrust bearings inside the diff is not centered properly as what Julius mentioned in his article.

Just another note... Did you put grease on the balls? Put some on it very sparingly. It will make for smoother diff operation and they remain smooth much longer. I use the Mugen Super Grease for this and this is the same I use on the Centax thrust bearings.

Brake Pads

hey guys, should the brake pads move freely on the pins. One of my pads are kind of tough to slide on the pins. should i be concern.

thanks for your help

Diff.

ini. D.

i did put a little grease on the bearings, it seems to be smooth, only time will tell.

thanks again.

Yes, they should move as free as possible. Use a blade or a reamer to enlarge the holes on the brake pads to avoid them binding in the pins.

Put grease on the balls.

I put silicone grease. I have dry graphite grease or one way grease. Should i use one of those.

thanks

Tell me SuperMaxx, Those Top Fuel motors you build, is it for a particular team? Those motors, they seem to lose Cylinders close to the end of the strip, is this because the motor is dying because ALL the power has been pulled from it or can you tell my why they go... Sorry, I was watching ESPN the other night and watch a lot of drag racing...

The silicone grease should be fine. The Mugen Super Grease is better in my opinion.

The dry graphite power is excellent for places at the hinge pins where the arms are held.

The oneway lube should go into the oneway bearing on the oneway front and the 1st gear hub. Clean and blast the oneway bearing with a nitro cleaner to get rid of the extra grease and grime. Let it dry. On the shaft, put a drop of oneway lube on it and smear it all around. Then put the shaft into the oneway bearing and turn it. That should be enough.

You could also smear just a little of silicone grease or silicone oil from the shocks on the main 2 speed shaft and the mid shaft where the bearings are on. That would avoid pre-mature wear and deep groove marks on the shafts.

For me, I also clean all the bearings from their original grease (except the small ones in the Centax clutch and the ones that go in the steering linkage) and relube them again.

Where did you get your Super Grease from, I have been trying to get from one of the LHSs here, but they keep trying to sell me some MIP Diff LUBE, which I bought, BUT, I didn't realise that the little tub had only enought to persuade a scale to move toward the 1 gram mark...

www.the-border.com has some  Just got a tube myself - nice and large compared with the other lubes I've had. This stuff is really sticky
