Default Nova n21bf limited help

Trying to break in my new nova 3port limited and am having some issues. Can anyone tell me where your needles are at or what you have for base settings. Both my instructions and the nova website state different settings. When I got the engine I never checked where the needles were at, I ran a couple tanks heat cycling it and it ran good for break in, it acted a bit rich on the low end and would drop rpms pretty quick at idle. Stupid me I decided it would be a good time to now check needle settings and found that the low speed was a few full turns leaner than the "flush" base setting indicated on the site. I didn't count my turns when I opened the lsn to flush (lesson learned) and now I think it might be hydro locking as my starter box struggles badly to turn it over. (with engine heated and plug 1/4 out) Just frustrated at the moment so any input, our idea where to put the lsn would be appreciated. HSN was good. Thanks

pretty sure stock on nova carbs is 5 turns out on the LSN and 3 1/2 turns on the HSN.

I'm not 100 percent, but Houston should see this pretty quickly I'm sure he'll know

I believe the same to be true. That's what RB (Nova based) calls for.

Yeah my WS7 and Plus 4 both called for it. I would assume that the N21 is probably the same.....

but you know what they say when you assume...

Those are the correct settings confirmed from my 21bf. They are extremely rich and you will need to lean them though.

Thanks guys, I did a little more digging and found some tips on working through the pinch. Its just frusterating that I had it going just fine yesterday and now today I can't get it to turn over on the box. I'll keep plugging away at it.

You are heating the engine up prior to starting it aren't you?

yeah, just bought a heat gun today. Yesterday I used a hair dry and it started, today when it wouldn't I figured I'd get a heat gun. Only thing different between yesterday getting it to turn over on the box and today not being able to is adjusting lsn to base setting and I added a little after run oil. Today the box just can't get past the pinch. Battery is charged in the box, engine is heated to 200, plug turned out 1/4 turn and she'll either slowly turn over or stop at the pinch. Its an ofna box with 2 550 motors.

what fuel bro ?


1 3/4 to 2 1/4 turns out with .75-1mm idle gap on lsn needle and 3.5-4 turns out on hsn for base race tune .

Try a hotter plug OD 77 Pinch off the fuel line when starting to get the engine fired up sounds like it maybe too rich on top..

I'm using 20% Byrons. That lsn setting looks about right with what it was prior to me turning out the 5 turns that the nova site states. Not sure if I'll have time to get to it today, but thanks for the help thus far!

What were your temps while heat cycling. It was everything I could do yesterday to keep my in the 200's. It really wanted to stay around 160-170 but lots of tin foil I started to get it up there.

I broke my n21bf in a few weeks ago. A very experienced friend of mine helped out. He even had problems getting mine started even after heating to 190-200 with my new ofna truggy box. The factory settings are very rich. I wrapped the head with aluminum foil and still had a hard time getting it up to temp. It has a gallon on it now but is still a very tight bastard even with heating. Im hoping with this next gallon of byrons 25% it will finally grow a pair. Dont get discouraged, I probably would have if it wasnt for the help. Its an awesome motor from what Ive seen so far and the help with nova on here is great with Houston/Monty. He has been a great help for me and he will be getting all my business when its time.(shouldnt be long either)

i only had to heat the engine up with a heat gun once than after that i just made sure that the piston was down and it starts once on the starter box
and i have about 1 tank run through it and its running about 178 than when the gas tank is almost empty about 186 degress

very hard on the internals of the engine when you dont use a preheat system .
