That is pretty "break the bank" to me. If buying new that is, those motors are very expensive.

I would highly reccomend a .21.

I would look at the Mugen JX ninja made by OS. They can be found for $300 and really scream, and should last a long time with the coated crank.

If that is too expensive, I would look at the novarossi plus 21-5k or a plus 4. The 5k sells for $270 right now, which is a killer deal for that engine. You could also look at the RB S5. That is a solid preformer and can be had for $235-240.

I've had great success with the Mach 427s. They do tend to lack a bit of top-end even with a JP-3 pipe. BUT it makes up for it in torque and bottom-end punch. Unless you've got ultra-long straight-aways, this isn't going to be a big factor. It gets good fuel mileage. I got over 8 minutes with it. My buddy that is a smooth driver gets closer to 10 minutes...

My buddies and I use these for "club" races instead of our more expensive engines and regularly beat guys running engines twice the price...

They general sell for around 170.00 and I regularly find them on ebay, new, going for around 100-125 bucks.....

Another good engine is the LRP Z3 .28. Goes for around 179.99. Good power all the way around although a bit of a gas hog.

For a .21 Go Tech .21 5 port race $200, or if you want bigger the GO tech .25 6 port race. The .25 is just as strong and actually stronger than most .28 engines and is the same price. And with the .25 you get similar runtime to the .21.

I ran the 5 port in truggy last year with a 8mm restrictor and was getting 10 mins and was smoking alot of more expensive mills on the straight. Now its in my buggy I just had to tame it with a 6.5mm venturi and carbon shoes. The .25 is a beast, low end of any .28 with the rpm's of a .21 its an amazing mill. If I wasnt switching to buggy I would have got the .25 last year. I had a heavy truggy though if you are putting it in the losi you dont even need the .25 the .21 will be fine because its light just make shure you go to walmart and get a heat gun for break in and around 2-3 gals swap the rod pin and clips and call it a day.

Personally I like many of today's engines...I think there are many good choices available..... However after owning and testing many of these engines I still come back to saying the Picco based .21's are the most powerful .21's on todays market.. I even own,modified and dynoed a Go 25 and even though it is a fantastic engine it doesn't make as much power or RPM as the Picco .21's do...Now I am not saying that because the Picco's are more powerful that they are better race engines, however if having big power is important to you then there is no better choice on todays market then a Picco .21.... Now if a person is really after having the biggest gun on the track a properly modified Picco .21 is in a league of its own...They have huge bottom end and a screaming top end you don't hear from other offroad engines....

edit: even tho the Picco's make big power they still have a few quirks, they don't have the smoothest powerband and the carbs can be leaky sometimes.. I do not consider them to be any better as a race engine then some of the others mentioned, however if big power is what you want nothing touches the Picco's

Try the GO Engines .21 5 ports, or GO Engines .25 6 ports ... really great engines for truggy and your wallte will have some bucks for spare truggy parts

It is a pull start motor so you need the $11.99 backplate too.

See sig. I run that motor. It has gobs of torque, and yes, about 8 minutes run time. I would say on short tracks (no REALLY long straights) it is as fast as my VSPEC. Put the Dynamite 053 pipe on it (about $50) and it is a great combo. Easy to break in, holds a tune good, plenty of power.

And don't scoff just because it is a "cheap ready-to-run" motor. It matches up with the higher end stuff pretty well, for less than half the cost.
