Of the cars listed, for a novice driver, I'd go with the Mugen. Tough as nails, doesn't wear fast, readily available parts.
The downside on the Mugen, having come from the Losi, you're going to be saying "how do I get this &*(&^ thing to TURN?!!"
I started with a Mugen (MBX5 ProSpec, not the R... similar, but the R DOES turn better) and they're very stable and forgiving. Great cars, but tend to push a bit in the corners. IMHO THE best beginner car made.
I then went to the Losi... it will teach to to react to the car, just too much of a handful for me. Also as you noted, parts wear is pretty significant. Great car, but not for my skill level.
I understand that the 808 is like the Losi but perhaps even MORE aggressive. Awesome build quality and blazing fast for the right driver, but if the Losi is too edgy, the 8ight 0h 8ight will be too.
Then I got the Jammin. It can ALMOST turn with the Losi, but has much more traction and stability. My favorite so far... might check it out.

And the Jammin was old before most of these buggy even existed! That should say something. But I still say the 808, I am a little bias there though.

Since you already go to the track, you should go and have a look at each car in person. Obviously some drivers are better than others, but see how each car drives, and ask some owners their thoughts. Then go into the hobby shop and see if they carry the parts for the car you like.

try try try
Stick with the eight, or atleast give it another chance. Try different setups.
I am a noob too, i just stared in this hobby and i just went and bought a RTR eight and i will agree man that thing was a handfull at times, but a few gallons later, i think it handls like its on rails. IMHO if you buy a buggy that is more forgiving all you will want is you eight back when you really get the hangout it driving the other ones....For the record first RC period, all that i replaced on the eight is some clutch bearing 2x, one set of clutch shoes 2 poopy throtle servos and some tires, and i am just as hard on parts and cars as the rest I only race have never bash.

Hey revracer...come by and check out the SoCal Team Hobao table this weekend. I'm sure one of us would be willing to let you give the Hyper 8.5 a test drive. Mine is modded to the hilt and we have one that I will be putting back together that doesn't have any mods on it. I think the Hyper 8.5 is a pretty good choice for durability and cost. I've been running mine since December and racing since April and haven't had to replace much of anything. Maintenance is simple on it as well. If you have a motor and electronics, you are more than welcome to give them a test drive.
Hope to see you out there soon!
