I used panther wheels and they work well,....also for starter boxes I got the Dynamite torque start, it is single motor, 12v or two 7.2v packs it is light weight and everything is accessable from the bottom.....

Microguy I used a box knife with a fresh blade and spun the starter over. Be very carefull and wear glasses as I had one blade snap and go flying. Another option would be to use rough grit sand paper on a block and spin the box over while holding pressure on an angle.

To help prevent the chance of pebbles locking up the flywheel, the 8IGHT was designed with a smaller hole where the starter wheel bumps against the flywheel. Most starter boxes will work, but if you have a starter box with a wide wheel, then you will need to chamfer the edges with a file (Reference the red triangles in the pictures below). Be sure to use eye protection. It is also critical that your 8IGHT chassis is lined up "perfectly" with the starter wheel on the starter box. We recommend doing this while you’re assembling your 8IGHT after Assembly Bag F.
Chamfer the edges of your starter wheel. Please wear eye protection while filing.
Make sure your 8IGHT lines up perfectly on your box.

What about engines, what are you guys leaning towards? I would love to run a V-spec, but with them being hit-and-miss as far as the front bearing... I will look elsewhere. Was thinking about the Rossi 21BF just for the local race scene, seems to have plenty of power for the price...

That is not going to fix the problem that most guys are having with the starter box. Many guys are using the large Ofna "chrome top" with the single 12v motor. It has too large a diameter wheel. Unfortunately, carving the chassis will be the only way for some to fix it.

in europe the jp pipes have no legal efra number
so official international races are excluded, like european champs...

Come on Jimbal. I don't know how many years you have raced 1/8th scale but I've been at it since Kyosho made the Burns (God I'm dating myself) LOL It wasn't even a Turbo Burns 
Maybe I've been lucky or something and even though I have heard of it happening I have NEVER had a rock stop my flywheel in all those years. Putting a bevel on the edge of the chassis at the flywheel opening if done correctly is the easist way to fix the starter box issue. Beveling the edge of the starter flywheel is only one of the problems. Most starter boxes have a relativley large diameter wheel and it simply won't get up into the flywheel opening easily without a little minor cosmetic surgery
I'll try to post a picture of my modified chassis later
