Default Let's talk savage diffs

I recently got back into MTing after a haitus in buggys.....I am completely going through my Savage X 4.6 and replacing all the broken shit on it and in that process I am redoing my diffs. I can't remember what weight I used to run but I do race the truck and do not really bash with it. What weight oils are you guys running in your savages?

With the larger tires, your going to have to run heavy oil. In my Revo, I tried 50k in all 3 diffs, ( tight, indoor track) and probably could have gone to say 10k or 30k in the front for more steering.

There is no center diff in the Savage so I'd say start at maybe 50k and go from there.

It's a pretty large outdoor track, mostly for 1/8th scale buggies but does have tight turns. I run AKA Ibeam truggy wheels and tires.

I run 20k in front and 10k in the rear of my race savage now I have swaybars and the HPI suspension conversion on it so that helps alot to.

Whats the suspension conversion? I've been looking for some good shocks for my Savage.

This is the suspension conversion. http://storefront.smfstore.com/index...oducts_id=2178

You can read my review of it here. http://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums...ad.php?t=12670

The HPI alum big bore shocks are great. I would stay away from the integy shocks and the lst shocks if I were you. The Big bore shocks are a direct bolt on and you only need one on each corner. http://storefront.smfstore.com/index...oducts_id=2008

One thing to do for racing a savage and the first thing I recomend is taking the shocks apart and add about 3/4" of fuel tubing around the shock shafts of the front shocks on the inside of the shock body and about 1/2" to the rear shocks to lower the truck and make it handle much better. The green or red springs are also a must for the suspension to soften it up. I would recomend 30-40 wt shock oil as well. The goal is to have the truck have a nice soft suspension it will bottom out with more than 4 feet of air but that is fine I still launch mine 20 plus feet in the air bashing no problem.

If you don't want to do the suspension conversion there is a way to mod the stock axle carriers and hubs to give you a better turning radius you just can't get the Castor angle that the suspension conversion gives you.

Depending on how much money you want to sink into the truck the options are endless. I won't lie to you making a good race truck out of the savage is by no means easy or cheep but it can be done. If you enjoy doing custom built trucks the savage is a great option. If you are looking for a out of the box racing monster truck than there are better options. But as with all racing at the end of the day the skill of the driver matters the most.
