Is the base track setup okay to start seems pretty small even to scale. Looks sorta tough to learn on but figured I’d ask

Tires make the single biggest improvement of anything. The stock tires the RTR come with are ok at best on the rough side of track. But are useless on the smooth side. Most places now run the smooth side.
Best thing to do is go watch a race. See what’s being run. If they are just getting started then probably have a car to try out. I never ran my brushless cars on the small layout. I can run one of my brushless cars on my home layout at full power. The other I have to reduce power
from spring. Home track

That’s an open end question. PN racing and Marka are the brands most commonly used for racing. But they do require being trued. I’ve used mostly Kyosho radials and a few of their low profile slicks. I was just starting to try using trued tires before things got shutdown in spring.
Front and rear are different width. So need set of each. It’s a common mistake made early on by most

ASF protocall
So I have a old Kyosho/KO ASF ex-5ur radio and from what I read the Kyosho #82040 receiver unit work with the ASF protocall. Anyone have info on this, can't find any documents stating the ex-5ur will work but they talk about the kt-18 ASF working?

It should work fine. I've used an EX-1UR with a 901SM module (ASF) and it worked fine with that receiver. It also works with the Das Mikro ASF boards.

Do you race with aluminum wheels or are they more for show?

Take a look at the Mini96 World Challange page and you can see that even on this small track the cars are going at a pretty impressive rate.
Cheers,

A good baseline tire combo is kyosho 30 low height slicks (lower profile so do not need truing) with Kyosho 20 radial rear or PN Soft rear tires. If you have a tire truer, I use PN medium on the front of almost all of my cars, but they need to be cut down. The PN medium front have considerably more traction than the kyosho 30, but the k30 is much easier to control for a newer driver.

I have just gotten 2 MR03's from Kenon hobby and love them. Kenon's customer service is great. I built a 16 x 8 track in my basement and these are worth every penny. I had seen on facebook complaining about the price but the body detail and performance seem to make it a good value.

I can't remember the groups but it was mainly people comparing them to Wl toys pricing. I don't see WL toys as even close. I own one of their drift cars and it is nothing like a Mini Z for driving or detail. The less popular bodies or cheaper licensing ones are cheaper but I don't mind paying for the ones I want. Right now finding stuff in stock is an issue more than anything.
