Maxamps has a small lipo back, pretty much same dimensions, just a little thinner that I might go with if I can't find the Apogee ones :(

I ordered the 140mm chassis...The last time I ran my micro at a challange, I ran 140 and ran 2nd in the "A" (before I crashed and finished 4th) so I'm going by what I know I'll like :)

Another charger I forgot was the Checkpoint charger - looks a lot like the ICE and has a better discharge rate (30amp) than the ICE, but it costs about $40-$60 more than the ICE...

I saw that too. Thats why I wanted to measure the space for the battery before I ordered anything. I wonder if the rear pod is the only difference between the 140mm and 150mm setup. And if so, can we get it seperately.

I know Mike had the 140mm rear pods available separately, I didn't see anything about the 150 pods though :(

Exo 3 parts

Everything is available seperately for the Exo 3 except for the servo mount and the center rear pivot (as of yesterday). I wouldn't be suprized if Mike would sell you those pieces too if you asked him. The difference in length between the 140 & 150 kits is in the main plate, not the motor pod plate.

You are correct- the difference is in the main plate. ;)

Roy & Kevin- the maxamps will work well for you also as long it's the same size or smaller in the 140 kit.

Ice charger all the way  Checkpoint has some discharge issues if you look in their thread.

The maxamps is 66mm long and the apogee is 60mm long. Will that still work?

Ice charger.... okay. Do I need a low voltage cut off too? How about a balancer? Is it overkill?

the last time i used a lipo pack (2s for my micro) I didn't use a balancer :)

If you mean low voltage cutoff in the esc ? by all means YES, it will drastically save the life of your pack...Lipos don't like going down to "zero" like the nimh cells...

pretty much most of the newer escs (say new/out in the last 1.5 years) have that programmed in...I know all the new Tekin ones have it, including the rage, B1 and B1r (but I might be a little biased on that ;) )

Rapid Roy 04-18-2008 12:57 AM

Okay, I just measured the space on the chassis for the battery. I'm only getting 58mm between the servo clamps and the base of the bracket for the center rear pivot. Am I missing somthing here? How square is a lipo battery? I can see squeezing the Apogee pack in there because its 60mm, but the Maxamps are 66mm long. I can slide the servo forwards more, but the servo clamps will still be in the way. Any ideas or advise?

Also, how freely should that center pivot rotate. I'm thinking it should be as free as possible, but I'm a bit concerned that if I loosten it up, it will start to wobble as it wears.

It looks fantastic so far though. I can't wait to get it all together and on the track.

As I was posting the link, I thought you might be using it for the HPI challenge. The HPI 150mm bodies seem to be in short supply right now. I'm assuming you already called around to your local shops. You can always email Andy Hilman at HPI. He is the one organizing the races and he is really good at checking availability at the warehouse.

I have 150mm corvette and 140mm viper bodies new in bag, if you are still looking.

Hey, just wanted to post my race results today. I didn't get all my parts to get my EXO3 up and running, so I ran the trusty EXO1 with NMhi batteries and the fireball motor. The car was hooked up and the motor was ballistic. If finally figured out a tire/spring combo that was killer. Qualified 2nd behind Mike who was in another world. He cake walked using a 18T with his special chassis. I had great qualifiers and a good main going until my rear tires decided to partialy let go from the rims. They would baloon up at higher speeds and make the car turn suddenly right. Had lots of fun though.

MikeR 05-06-2008 09:02 AM

Yes, your car was a rocket ship. Think faster than mine down the straight:eek: Was fun racing!

k_bojar 05-10-2008 07:47 PM

Mike - any chance of you posting a couple pics of your chassis WITH your electronics mounted?

I found a way to get the HS81MG in the 140mm chassis, now just trying to see how to run the wires :)

Thanks

Kaybo

SN33KY 05-10-2008 08:50 PM

get the 82mg

the 81mg has centering issues ;)

or you can go with the s3102mg from futaba, thats what i use on my m18

Funny, 99% of all the people I race with have a problem with the HS81 - I'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE 5 or 6 of them I've had...I have 2 now, which are fine...sold a couple with my original M18

The issue I was having is that its a VERY tight fit with ANY servo and the lipo pack on the 140mm chassis - so it really don't matter what I used...I looked at the spec on the 82 - its the same size as the 81 and 85...Don't know the specs on the Futaba one, but I ain't dropping the $$ on one...

I've need using hitec micro servos in my cars since the mRS4 first came out - and don't really see a need to change now :) I actually ran some model futaba in my m18 - didn't like it, and switched back to the hitec...

I was just looking at the fitment of the battery too. Did you remove the shrink wrap or did you mount it up off the chassis with shims?

I didn't do anything with the pack yet...was thinking about removing the shrink sit it is a little big and I didn't feel like looking for shims ;)

That's kinda why I wanted to see a pic or 2 of Mike's cars :)

Roy - do you have the 140 or 150 chassis?

I would but I for the life of me cannot find my EXO3 roller. I'm afraid my 2 year old stuffed it somewhere in the shop:cry: From what I recall the battery wire faced forward and to the right of the servo if that helps, mamba on top of battery and micro spektrum left of the servo.

I was test fitting mine with the wires on the left side of the chassis (drivers side) with the spektrum receiver there as well....

I'm still waiting for the day my 2year old does something similar - luckily she's still a little afraid of them

Mike - any chance of coming up with another option for the side springs?? I tried ordering the HPI parts of they are all outta stock - even the like the Roy sent me..and over the years I've ditched most of these type extras :flaming:

Hmm maybe Golden Horizons? They used to make alloy dampers so maybe he has spares laying around his factory?... What about also Micro T shocks? pretty cheap and worth a shot.

I orderded and received that part from www.amainhobbies.com last week. Give them a try. RCboyz only sent me one. The part I just received was missing the extra shock shaft. Good thing I have an extra one from before. Now I can't find the 1st set I received from RCboyz.

Looking at my 140mm chassis, I was thinking that if I removed the servo mount and shoe gooed the servo to the chassis, I could slide the servo forward far enough for the battery to fit in there. I also have the 150mm chassis and will move everything over once I get all my parts.

I just checked amain and the part is in stock.

amainhobbies has them in stock, hmmm....If they have 2 sets, I'll have to tell rcboyz NOT to back order them for me...

I've thought about shoe-gooing my servo in, but I like Mike's mounts ;) and I got the servo to fit by removing the bottom part of the case - doing that gave me the extra space I needed :sneaky:

Just have to decide what I want to do about the wrap on the lipo pack ;)

I ordered 2 from RCboyz. They only ended up having one. I ordered the second one from amain and got that one quick. Now I can't find the 1st one. :flaming::blush::cry:

I'll eventually get this darn thing together and raced. I'm having a little bit of a delema though. Last race the EXO1 ran so well I want to run it again. I'm sure I can get the EXO3 to run at least as well. I got a some advise from another racer (I don't even know his name) that was commenting on my car/chasis. He used to run 1/12 pan at So Cal raceway and said they always ran the front as stiff as possible and the rear as soft as possible. I stiffened up the front and the car was on rails.

I normally run the kit black springs in the front, with a black AE spring in the rear...but when that kind of tip, i might consider running the green springs up front - but, like you parts, i can't find them now :flaming:

Rapid Roy 05-12-2008 10:09 AM

Here's the secret setup. Shhhh....

Green springs front with added o-ring, soft wide tires front and back = hooked up!!

k_bojar 05-12-2008 10:18 AM

heheh...

I'll have to give it a try :)

I only have soft rears, was going with the stock ones up front - worse case, I got my GQ foams :D

I gotta hot tip on a shock alternative. I'm going to check it out today. Will post tonight on if it works.

Rapid Roy 05-12-2008 11:59 PM

Okay here's what I bought earlier tonight.

http://www.target.com/Radlines-Oil-F...Ashocks&page=1

They are the right length and seem to be really smooth. 4 shocks with 3 different springs, and connectors for both ends. Oil filled too. I opened one up and it really does have an oil resevoir and a piston. The ball cup is a bit small for the ball studs on the EXO3. I'll either use the provided ball studs or cut the cup to loosten it. I also need to fabricate a custom mount for the top end of the shock. It's going to be a bit more work then I thought, but it should work killer. I'll post pictures when I get somthing mocked up.

EXO 3 MOTOR WIRE

Mike, On your Exo 3 instructions you say to replace the motor wire with 18 AWG silicone wire.Do you know how to get inside the Mambas or do you just cut the wires close to the can and splice them? Also, do you know of a good source for red, black, & white silicone wire?

Rapid Roy 05-15-2008 09:54 AM

www.blindbatts.com has the wire. The web site having some problems, but Kevin answers emails.

Hi,

Yes, I cut the plugs off and wire direct to the esc. I think i got my wire from cheapbatterypacks.com ;) My mamba is now in my 18R but you get the idea here,

oldrcer 05-15-2008 03:17 PM

..and thanks Mike.
