Advanced Setup - Corner weights

Callum delves into the mystery of the corner weight, not one for the weak hearted!
Written by Callum McGillivray, Model Racers

Advanced Settings: Corner Weights.

Now that Largescale has grown up somewhat, there is, in the technical sense, a rapidly narrowing gap, between 1/5 Scale racing cars and their Full Size Cousins. We have seen the introduction of many pieces of equipment that have, up till now, been in the province of the "Real Racers". We know, for instance about Camber Gauges, Toe-in gauges, kit for checking ride heights and caster and so on. We even have the odd Dynamometer knocking about.

Now, it seems we have taken another step in the search for better performance from our vehicles:

CORNER WEIGHT SCALES

Corner weights are important, at our level of competition, because all things are relative. This means that if a car is to perform at its best, it has to be able to make full use of the devices available to control its progress.

Ok, most of us have a reasonable knowledge of the basics of Suspension workings, but we can always improve on that knowledge. In order to understand how Corner Weight works, you have to understand how a Tweak Board works.

TWEAK BOARD

A device which measures the resistance of the suspension throughout the full range of suspension movement, by means of a Fixed Surface, which acts on one end of the Chassis, a connecting bar, or board and a Swivelling Surface, which acts on the suspension at the other end of the Chassis. As the chassis is depressed, small differences between each suspension unit are inevitable. The Tweak Board shows these changes as differences in suspension compression side to side. The suspension is then adjusted until there is minimal or no difference in the relative movement between the suspension units on the same axle, it cannot, however, show static differences in suspension loading.

Corner Weights

This is where the ability to determine the Corner Weight comes in. The actual figures are not important, they are only used as an aid in obtaining equality from side to side.

Having adjusted all the suspension linkages and set the ride heights and damping rates, this is as far as most take it. The next step is, usually the Tweak Board, then on to the Circuit, for final adjustments.

However, all this can be in vain if the basic Corner Loading is unbalanced. This can result in really odd handling, which is difficult, if not impossible to resolve.

Adjusting the corner weight ensures that each suspension unit is doing its fair share of the work of supporting and loading the vehicle.

aladjustment manifests itself as Pitching or Yawing when accelerating or braking, variance in steering or cornering performance, i.e., Oversteer in one corner and Understeer in another, or unpredictable reaction to bumps and other road features.

The first step is to ensure that the suspension is carefully assembled and operates freely throughout its entire range. The springs and dampers must be matched as closely as possible, in terms of length, rate and stroke.

CornerWeight adjustment is achieved by first, measuring the force exerted against the ground, by each suspension unit and is done, in the simplest state, using a Hook type Scale.

Each wheel, in turn, is attached to the Hook Scale, the scale is raised until the wheel just clears the ground. After noting each weight, the idea to achieve, as close as possible, a parity between sides. This is done by adjusting the Spring Preload on the DiagonallyOpposite Suspension unit to the wheel you have just measured.

Important.

You must carry out this procedure on a completely flat and level surface, otherwise any measurement, or adjustment will be totally inaccurate.

It must be remembered that Corner Weights affect the Diagonally opposite Corner. Therefore, to adjust, say, the Right Front Corner Weight, you have to alter the Left Rear Spring pre-load.

As you progress through the procedure, it will become evident that you may end up with springs that appear to be at different lengths. This is normal, as, even between springs from the same batch, there will be differences in rate.

Spring Rate(the strength of the spring, under deflection),should not be confused with Pre-load(the pre-tensioning of the spring, to achieve ride height or Corner Weight).

This adjustment LR/RF, RR/LF, LF/RR, RF/LR, will need to be carried out several times in rotation, in order to achieve the desired effect. The entire balance of the car can, in this way, be tuned to the particular Circuit. For example, if the circuit was mainly right hand bends, you can adjust the chassis to be stronger on the left suspension and then use tyre compounds to compensate for the extra hardness in the opposite side.

This would give a car with progressive and predictable handling for this circuit. This is a simplified example, as you can further Pre-tune the Chassis response, by using different damper rates side to side to compliment the Spring Pre-load.

The use of Multi Rate, or Progressive Springs, introduces another parameter to this already complicated formula, but, with careful component selection and adjustment, it will be seen that:

the tuning of the Suspension is as important as having the Ultimate in Horsepower.

In fact it is more important, because, if you can't put it down, or handle it when it gets there, then all the Horsepower in the world is going to be useless!

The use of multiple Scales, will help to simplify this procedure, by allowing you to instantly see what effect your tinkering is having!

If you have to use one Scale, it must be of the Hooktype, so as to leave the wheels not being weighed, in contact with the ground. Anyother type of scale will entail the vehicle not being level, which will render the measurement invalid.

One can use 4 suitable domestic type scales, providing they have the necessary range and sensitivity, approx total weight capacity should be around 15Kg. Graduations of 0.01gr. should suffice. There is also available, for those who want to have latest technology, the Largescale Weighing System, which combines 4 electronic scales in a precision table.

Finally, please note that no amount of corner weight adjustment will compensate for an inherently unbalanced car. By this, I mean if the exhaust, batteries and fuel tank were all placed on one side of the chassis, then the car would be heavy on one side. The only way to overcome this is to re-distribute the offending articles around the chassis in a more even manner.
