My take on this matter:

1. Discontinued na yung Duratrax Thunder Quake.

2. No local distributor/dealer for Duratrax items. You'd have to get specific spares, if still available, from Towerhobbies.com

3. Parts are usually specific to a kit. It's not easy to mix and match with other manufacturer parts. If you have mechanical/machinist inclinations, you can be creative in fitting other manufacturer parts.

4. A little googling, and rcuniverse.com states the street price of a new RTR kit at $399.99 (before it was discontinued?). You can check out the info including user reviews at http://www.rcuniverse.com/product_gu...cfm?car_id=198. Depends on the condition of the kit if 12k is reasonable.

5. As for the engine, and knowing Duratrax, I would assume it's a basic engine. If you're just into running around your neighborhood, it should do. The question that begs to be answered is... "What is the condition of the engine?" (Sorry, I can't help you determine this. Last time I was into Nitro was more than 10 years ago).

6. Since you're looking into wetting your fingers in this hobby... I'd have to ask you "How do you see yourself with this hobby? Do you see it as purely recreational and would be content running around? Or do you fancy racing? Do you think you'll be in it for the longer term? Or is it just a trial thing and if you don't like it, you plan to sell the kit later on?"

Agree with everybody's suggestions. And I have another one. You can get my Tamiya TNX with engine for just P10,000. It being Tamiya, parts support is aplenty.
