Yeah F-Zero came first. It was released at or near the console's launch to show case the mode 7 pseudo 3D capabilities. That and pilot wings I think. Funny you compare it to Mario Kart, I had never thought about that. I learned the creator of F-Zero drew inspiration of the game from the Batman movie and seeing Gotham city. That may explain Captian Falcon and the appearance of his craft, it resembles the shape of the bat mobile when I think about it. Funnily enough the game was intended to be a wheeled racer, through a city with Gotham City being the influence. But the due to the SNES's limitations, meant it couldn't render 3D environments and rotating wheels on the cars. So the decision was made to remove the wheels and make the cars hover. And elevate the track above the city instead of through it. And F-Zero was born.
