No they aren't.
It amazes me to hear people whine about the cost of a transponder the lasts for years and years at 100$ but you same cats will drop 80$ on a brushless motor that might last 2 seasons or 100$ plus on a lipo or Servo. Lets not even talk a out ESC's that let the magic smoke out.
I have transponders that are at least 7 years old and still work fine. I can't think of a single RC item I own that hasn't been replaced in that time frame other then a couple tools
It's a necessary part of racing equipment. You want to race you have to have a transponder.

Im not questioning the durability of them and they have changed (not recently, but they have changed). Im just saying for a simple device as it is, its pretty crazy that it costs 100$. MRT makes clones for cheaper, which a lot of people have went that route. Most people in my area have either Mylaps or AMB.

Get couple of receiver extension wires and put one on each car. Use Velcro to mount the transponder on top of battery. That way you don't plug and unplug the transponder off the receiver and every time you put the battery it will remind you to put the transponder in. It's a cheap way to go without spending $$.

I agree. Transponders are tiny, made in china I bet, and less then $10 to make and ship I bet. We cant do anything about it. Like it was said, if u want to race u need to buy one. $100 for a tiny piece like that is crazy to me, and look I have 5 lol. Buy them used on here for $50-$90 and call it a day.

Hate to break it to you but AMB and now My Laps controls time keeping for ALL racing and I mean ALL. F1, Moto GP, AMA Superbike, Nascar ALMS you name it they use that timing equipment. I'm sure your right that they are pretty cheap for our tiny units to produce but so are 90% of the things on our toy cars.
