Hi, this depends on motor very much. Which type 540 motor did you use? Stock 27t, super stock 23t, or modified 9t? All this motors require different currents? Please give more info...

Usually when you buy an ESC,you got to check out how many turns can the ESC take.
Most of the top of the line ESCs can take unlimited turns, some can take till 12 turns and some even more...
Usually a 10 turn can draw more than 10 amps.So when you select an ESC check the rating of how many turn can the ESC go down to?
If you us a 9 turn on an ESC which can only take 12 turns, you're goin to blow that ESC.

a rs sport tuned 540 motor... at which point does going to a higher amp draw does it not become benificial coz the 540 cant use the power anyway?

Basically speaking, try to find the number of turns your motor has, and then ppl here can help you better.
But from the looks of it, looks like you are running stock, so any esc that takes a 19 turn, you will be ok.

i am going to get a gt7 ... yeah i know a bit overkill... but.... it asks to install motor capacitors... how do i go about doing that on a the 540 mubachi motors?
use 3 capacitors
1 to positve to negative
1 positive to the outer can; and
1 negative to the outer can
is that right? or do i not need it for stock motors? i never required it from my sport esc..

The capacitors are used to help stop glitching, in a 540 silver can or a RS-540 Sports Tuned they are all ready installed within the can itself.

Getting a good ESC is never an overkill, take it as a investment where next time as your skills gets better and your need for speed is up,you just need to get a faster motor and not another faster motor and ESC.
And a top grade ESC has lower IR than lower spec ESC.Thus givin you better punch.
