You don't need them as long as your battery is not a LiFe, which are much lighter than LiPo. LiFe are very common in Japan. This is the reason why Tamiya didn't include the new holders in the conversion kit and only in the JDM full kit.

Beside this the conversion kit contains all new R-parts.

My EVO 7 has the new holders too but I prefer the old 419x style because you don't need 45g extra weight on battery side while driving relatively heavy 300g Lipo racing packs.

Does the conversion contain the tall shock tower they have in the kit?

I hope they will sell the tall towers separately soon. I like the handling of the long big bore tc springs from tamiya better than the short BB springs on asphalt tracks by a good margin.

Are the long BB shocks really better with the X? I drive my short BB shocks with SMJ progressive and linear springs which are better than original ones.

it all comes down to personal preference.. I prefer the SS, I know a few additional seasoned racers that also agree with tobyzhang

For TCS reasons we are limited to Tamiya springs. With Axon/SMJ/Xray springs on the SSBB shock I have no complains. For Tamiya America I settled on AXON SH 2.8 all around if I don't have to use Tamiya springs. I got the tamiya SSBB black springs to work reasonably well but still too stuck for my preference. Some have went to red front and black rear with good result. I'll do some more testing to see if I can compensate with geometry changes to make Tamiya Springs work better.

Since I needed shocks for my car and from my experience, the TRF ones leaks, I pulled the trigger and got the Axon ones. Picked up some Axon 2.8 springs since everyone raved how good they were. Man, these are the most expensive shocks and a major pain in the ass to put together.

I ordered the 419 specific Axon shocks, but it doesnt come with everything I need. So I ran around my LHSs looking for the top and bottom ball cups, bladder and spring perch. This costed me around 100USD in total. which was more than half of what I paid for the car. I might need to find another spring perch as the blue didnt work the way I hoped it would. These shocks better be worth it.

I have never had leaky TRF shocks. (except for slight weeping from the shaft seals, which is normal for any shock sealed with O-rings.)

If you use the older Tamiya clear O ring in the shock it will not leak at all. I feel the quality of the TRF shock is very good already. They just haven't figure out their blue O rings yet.

Feels good to be back on the 419x. Compared to the other cars I own, I would say the 419x is very neutral. The setup right now doesnt have super fast turn ins and the car is very predictable.

Im very please with the Axon shocks and springs so far. It damps really well. I was a bit greedy on turns and launched off the curb but the car landed with not drama, I dont think it even bottomed out. Spend a little more time with the setup and it should be a nice car to drive. Waiting for the conversion kit to come.

hey guys, have a question as I'm rebuilding my 419x and just noticed that my spur has a slight wobble / play into it, since this is a floating pulley is a wobble normal on a 419x ? or does that mean my pulley needs to be replaced? thanks!

My new spur wobbles on the car too but I didn't notice it affecting the handling.

You can add shims to take out the play but I don't know if it's necessary

Is the spur gear the right size for the mount?
