20* 8.3 final - no boost or turbo in the speedo.

That's way too slow baby with your 20* and 8.3fdr for a 4.5t .... That's more 3.5t territory or 4.0t.... I got my 3.5t at 30* and 8.409 fdr with no heat issues at all , but I do try to drive with as little brake as possible... I am however going to try boost with my 3.5t in the near future though: I guess 11* from 30K to 40K and some turbo after that at full throttle, but full throttle shouldn't be used often.....

My 5.0 octa def. rips harder than my reedy 5.0, but on an indoor track im normally faster with the reedy, cause its easier to drive and you dont need the speed. Outdoor tracks though, LRP all the way Always fun going to the nitro track and making the guys with $500 motors look like they didnt hit 2nd

This is my favorite thread. As someone who plans on getting into mod this summer this helps a ton. My question is would it be a good idea to start in mod with a more mild motor like a 7.5-6.5? It seems like 4.5 is common for experienced guys but why not start with something that is more manageable then go faster from there.

As was said before I would feel better finishing last in mod that dominating stock.

I believe that if you start with something less than a 5.5/5.0 you will have to retrain yourself to get used to the additional speed. Case in point, one of our locals decided he wanted to run Modified and we talked and I gave him the same suggestion but he still bought an 8.5 and within what was maybe a couple of weeks of trying to boost it to be competitive finally decided to buy a 4.5 and told me that he should have taken my advice and bought the faster motor to begin with.

9.5t to 6.5t motors are RTR motors at best, and should really be geared towards reeling in newcomers to the hobby with comparable speeds to the Nitro RTR's, but not for Mod Racing ....

How about the rest of the car... Most discussions is motor or driving style so far. How about set-up?

Coming from a 13.5 Turbo as the fastest is there any "general" changes to car set-up one should think about making when going mod?

Also, what wires is needed for a 4.5 Motor?

More things to think of apart from the motor?

I was planning on using a RS Pro and a 4.5turn in TC! Any thoughts on that combo. Be honest.

Rspro with a 4.5t equals POOF !!! Most racers prefer the Hobbywing v3.1 ! I have the new Novak Pulse to test later in the summer: might be good......

Honestly, if your car is really good in 17.5, id start there. When I ran my TC6's in 17.5 and mod, they were probably 90-95% the same. Most of the time, theyd be the same geometry, but id run a LTC body in stock, and a Mazda in mod. And I ran a heavier diff oil for mod (~500cst stock, 1000cst mod)

13g wire is fine

You will want a fan on your ESC. And you will want more drivetrain spares on hand (belts, pullies, driveshaft couplings, etc)

On carpet yes, I see more stock class drivers running an LTC and for mod we run a Speed6 the majority of time, the only person that I know that runs a LTC in mod on carpet 99.99% of the time is Josh, I think Paul has ran an LTC on carpet his last couple of races. On asphalt LTC for both stock and mod.

this past weekend out i ran my rspro with a new gen2 4.5 and the only problem i had was thermaling from no fan and dragbrake. once i put a fan on there it ran problem free. messtons of boost and all.
unless im outdoors ill probably run the 4.5 in blinky though. or very minimal turbo as its fast enough in tc.

i went in with two serpents setup equally and the biggest change i noticed between the mod and stock cars was droop.

i usually set it by downstop blocks but tried ORH as per recomendation of a very fast driver.
i went with 3mm front and 4mm rear orh droop which didnt seem like very much but it sure worked.
only just putting it on the blocks now to see where it is, and that puts it around 7 on the hudy blocks which is where i might set my nitro car lol.

ran the same shock settings. 350cst, 3/4 holes in the middle setting and 4mm rollcenter shims f/r. car was very sensitive, but it was WAY worse with more suspension travel.

doubt this would have worked for everyone but it seemed to work for me going from a stock car mostly.
on vrc mod cars seemed to work better with more suspension travel on carpet but it was the opposite for me..
but that is just one race. I finished 3rd against some great drivers. dont run mod that often as id have to go to vancouver. a $100 day.

Yes, did forget to mention that is for carpet, and yes LTC always on asphalt

So RS Pro is ok to use just dont add boost? I thought in the specs for the RS Pro they say it can handle motors up to 3.0 or something like that. I would be sensitive to adding boost to a 4.5 almost none at first to begin with as a newby. Was just wandering for later and what the pro could handle VS any other speedo. Thinking about where and what to invest in. I ran 13.5 with my RS this last weekend and it worked great with the 17.5 stock setup on car.
