o. i run 6cell tc outdoors. and it gets pretty hot here so that would be why. last person i saw that ran a 3.5 had an insanely fast car. he could smoke everyone on the straights. but he raced in the summer and fryed his system

Sphere Comp combined with the Novak 3.5 motor in touring car on a very large outdoor track with high temps (both ambient and track) can destroy the esc. I have tried this combo and it was insanely fast for 3 mins. Thermalled and never worked properly after that (kept on shutting down after 30sec to 2 mins continously). Was covered under warranty and the local distributor/importer promptly replaced it for me.

Since then I have tried it with the LRP 4 star motor, however the 4 star does not compare to drivers using 4.5 and 3.5 motors (Novak and GM). I have just tried a Novak 4.5 with a sintered rotor and it was very quick. (depending on gearing and profile setting it was as fast or faster than a Novak 3.5)

So far I am happy with the Novak 4.5 (with sintered rotor) and the Sphere Comp (I am also running an extra cap on the esc and 2x40mm fans - motor and esc). The track temp in testing got to 58'C and ambient in the shade was 32'C. pics of track here

I will test further this weekend with the 4.5 in racing and post my findings. I might even give the 3.5 another go (this time with different settings - profiles and gearing).

All of my testing and results have been with 6 cells.

gearing can make a big difference, so make sure you have the right gearing for the motor. that will really effect temps. and with 2 fans and an extra cap, then it will stay alot cooler. also put the heatsink on it. that really helped mine.

Yesterday was another successful test of the LRP Sphere Competition with the Novak 4.5 (with sintered rotor). The track temps reached a staggering 62'C and the esc never even looked like thermalling. Max temp of the esc was 56'C and the motor was at 65'C.

Same track as before (Brendale - 2006 Nitro World's Track) and this combo was as fast as the guys using GTB's with 3.5. The gear ratio I used was 8.5FDR.

The only damage done was to the double sided tape holding the esc on, it melted (no fault of the esc) as I measured the temp of the esc and it was only 53'C, I am assuming it was due the radiated heat of the track surface when it was at 62'C!!! No sign of a thermal whatsoever. Lots of guys were thermalling with their Novaks and a couple of guys with the GM systems were close to the shutdown limit (100'C)!!!


All is good so far. The combo is quick, reliable, and so far has not issues. Hopefully it will hold me in good stead for our Nationals this weekend.

I was waiting for your test for a while....
I am also planning to use the same combo as yours.
LRP Sphere Competition with the Novak 4.5 (with sintered rotor) on my Xray-T2.
But your FDR is an other question for me.
Till now, I never used brushless motor.
And my FDR (for 7x2 motor) was 8,7. (87 spur-48Pitch / 17 pinion-48Pitch x 1,7 car ratio = 8,7FDR).
So now for 4.5 turn BL motor which FDR do you offer?
According to my idea 87 spur/14 pinion x 1,7 = 10,6 will be a good beginning ratio to test it for a 4,5 turn BL motor.
What's your opinion?

Hi Sertac,

I am from Brisbane, Australia (Sunshine State!!! ). It is usually hot and humid here. avg temps for this time of the year is around the high 20's to mid 30's (celcius) with track temps over 55-65'C+.

Anyway, with FDR it all depends on the track size (length on straight and overall size). I am geared at 8.5FDR as the track is extremely large. For a smaller track I would probably start anywhere bewteen 9.5 -10.00. Your suggested gear ratio seems rather high (10.6FDR) but as I said its is dependant on your track size/dimensions.

Brushless is all about finding a 'small' sweetspot. If you either under or over gear it it will or can overheat too quickly. (ie. finding the correct gear ratio can drop or alter temps quite significantly).

with that setup i would run roughly a 9.5 + or - one or 2 point. i run a 75 tooth spur with a 18 tooth pinion on an average sized track and its great. amazing torque and great speed. i would recomend something i nthat range. possible a little higher. and does the novak motors work with the lrp stock? like can you take the motor and plug it directly into the lrp without any mods?

No, there is modification necessary to make the LRP work with novak. Just plugin and play.

Nothing needs to be done to make a Lrp and Novak motor work, just plug in and use.
