Thank for the setup advice!
Here is my big concern. The rear diff. I have always run the xray ball diff which was way too easy to adjust. Now, with a gear diff it seems like more of a hassle to switch. I have NO idea what oil to run as our track is small, fast, and technical. I need to power out of the turns quickly and carry power deep into the turn if I want to stay with the leaders.
Traction is so subjective. What I find to be high grip others may say med. How do I tell if I have the rear diff set correctly? Just run the kit oil and be happy?
The carpet is an indoor carper, not an RC carpet.

I'd just run the kit 700cst. However, there are other setup things I'd worry about before the diff oil. 700 is a good start as the diff action will be very light and smooth and will help keep the car planted under power. Thicker oils, 2000cst or so, may start giving you a little onpower oversteer. Think of a locker/spool in the rear axle of a real car, when it's locked it's easy to do cookies, when it's not it will tend to push. Obviously, there's a grey area for everything though.

Dumb question, are diff oils and shock oils the same? Can I use a 40 weight shock oil that has a cst listing of 1000?

But I don`t think that 40 weight oil actually has a rating of 1000cst.
However, every brand of oil is somewhat different in weight even if the numbers on the bottle are the same.
