The indoor carpet track in Indianapolis/Beech Grove should be back to racing this weekend!! This has always been a fun track to race VTA on Friday nights. The Covid-19 closure gave the facility a chance to install new carpet with a subfloor & more square footage AND a new driver's stand. Here is a link to their facebook page...

Lol, I just checked this thread and I forgot to include the facebook link for the Indy R/C Raceway & Hobbies. Below is a link for the track's LIVE RC page. Make sure to check out videos to see what it is like to race VTA (or other types of racing) on a small indoor carpet track. If you like passing and tight racing, it is very fun!!

Default Bodies

Hi there,

Anyone got a view on body fitment?

I’ve got a BD9 converted to VTA and the ‘69 Camaro from Protoform is perfect. The Javelin and 67 Mustang are horrendous. Wrong wheelbase and too wide.

Any other bodies that fit right? I’ve got some Seils decals and don’t want to waste my time.

Thanks.

The simple answer is that there is always some creative license that the body manufacturers take when making "realistic" r/c car bodies. While I have been critical of some of Protoform's VTA design compromises, I think they have done a very good job of creating a wide variety of VTA bodies that represent this historic era of racing AND work well on the track.

Most of the VTA bodies are wider due to the wheels/tires being used in VTA racing. The USVTA legal front wheels are designed to use a 26mm tire. The USVTA legal rear wheels have a 6mm offset and are designed to use 31mm tires. It is difficult to mount a standard 190mm wide body 1/10 TC body on a chassis using USVTA legal wheels, since the rear tires will most likely stick out/not fit under the body.

Another thing to consider with chassis fitment on specific bodies is that most 1/10 4wd touring cars have the ability to adjust the width of the suspension AND the length of the wheel base. Current USVTA body manufacturers cannot predict how an individual has setup their car, so they will design their bodies to fit the widest variety of chassis available. This may result in someone's tires not lining up perfectly in the bodies wheel arches or the tires being very narrow within the body itself. However this problem isn't unique to just VTA bodies. If you make a wheel base adjustment on any chassis after the wheel arches have been cut out of the body, your tires aren't going to be centered in opening.

So what can you do if you feel that the wheels/tires sit too far inside the body. Many people who race VTA will either use wider wheel hexes or spacer on their front wheels. Depending on your setup or driving style, this can make the car easier to drive. If changing the setup on your car isn't desired, most manufacturers list the specs of their bodies so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. Here is a list I compiled from the manufacturers websites that might help someone.

Protoform Bodies (https://www.racepf.com/vta/)

HPI - '67 Corvette (Stingray) - 17526
Wheelbase - unknown
Width - 200mm

Some locations allow this body to be raced in their VTA class. This body is NOT APPROVED in the USVTA rules

----------

Here are the Mcallister bodies (
https://mcallisterracing.com/shop/ols/all)

'70 Cuda - #315
Wheelbase - 255mm
Width - 200mm

'69 Mustang - #286
Wheelbase - 255mm
Width 200mm (flares above wheel arches)

'70 Camaro - #304
Wheelbase - 255mm
Width 200mm (flares above wheel arches)

'70 Firebird - #295
Wheelbase - 255mm
Width 200mm (flares above wheel arches)

'68 Cougar - #305
Wheelbase - 255mm
Width 200mm

I have run all of the Mcallister bodies and didn't have any excessive issues with the front or rear tires rubbing on the inside of the body. I just wanted to point this out since all of their measurements are the exact same (from their website). While these bodies aren't as detailed, they tend to be cheaper and are a 1-piece mold. This tends to make them a bit more durable than a lot of the other bodies that have 2-piece molds.

Thank you for the very constructive response. This is very useful. I'll see how wide I can go on width, but will focus my attention on building to the narrower bodies for now.

I have noticed, from photos, that these seem to fit nice, but aren't as detailed around the front and rear as you say. I suspect it's the 200mm width that works.

It’s not bad, I think the rear toe throws it out. Once I have it set up properly it might improve.
