Hello, i was wonder if you all can help me out. I am trying to help a fellow racer with his F1R. We are running on a High-bite carpet track that is roughly 90x40. For about the first 3 mins of the race, the car is planted very well with fast times around 11.1-11.4 secs. The last 3 mins, the front tires fade out extremly and cause a push thru out entire corner. These lap times would be anywhere between 12.5 - 13.0 secs. Loss of about 1 sec per lap. What would cause this? And what setup advice do you have if not a setup for the chassis.
Here is the setup we are running as of now:
F1R Chassis w/F104 front end
15wt oil in side shock
i think 15 or 20 wt center shock with tamiya white spring(not sure on lb)
Med front springs on king pins
soft rear springs
2.5 caster
roughly 1 degree total of toe out
Pit tires 572 and 574
I am trying to use my car as a comparison to set his up. I am running avg of 10.9 - 11.3 sec laps thru the whole 6 min race on same track.
This is my setup:
F104 X1
Med front springs
Soft center spring
CRC 5000 tube grease on dampner
High-bite t plate
2.5 caster
1 deg total toe
pit tires 571 and 572
Thanks in advance for any help

question on side springs
Hey MikeR,
Just a quick question about side spring setup i'm hoping you can answer.
It seems side springs for most pan cars are usually set to just touching the links (or more). From what I understand it's usually set this way in order to prevent pod tweak and ensure straight tracking.
However, the F1R manual suggests something contrary. It recommends setting the side springs to 1-2mm above the links for the standard setup and only lowering the springs to gain steering.
Any particular reason for this suggestion? Correct me if i'm wrong anywhere; just trying to understand the differences more clearly. My F1R is great, but sometimes it doesn't seem to track straight under throttle. I've made certain the rear pod isn't tweaked and I'm experimenting with various setups to fix the issue.
Thanks!

Hi, sure no problem.
I suggest that to begin with because about 95% of guys getting into F1 have zero pan car experience. It's best to start conservative and progress to more steering as you get the car settled in and comfortable. We want stability first especially with F1 rubber tires
For straight tracking problems you may have too much steering. Try a little front toe out, more front camber, more front droop and make sure the ride height isn't so low that the chassis bottoms especially at the center link.
May be time for a diff rebuild and once done do not overtighten thus making it bind up but not too loose that it slips. Check the axle bearings for notchiness.
What is your tire combo?

Ah, makes sense; appreciate the tips. I'll play around with those settings.
I'm running 1* toe out and 2* camber, and the car still tracks a little unpredictably even after a diff rebuild. Axle bearings look pretty good and I'll try re-checking the front end and ride height/droop.
I'm running the 571/572 combo, so i think tires should be ok.
Thanks again!

The F104 diffuser plate is also the lower pod plate...the F1R conversion does not use the F104 lower pod plate.
