Tired of waiting for the Factory team gear diff i bought a Spec-R diff today.
One question for the "gear diff guys". What kind of oil gives you best results in the rear/front end with mod motors? ( i use a 5.5T)
Anyone can give a feedback on this diff's?

I am talking about rear setup only:

I have 2x2 on each side of rear arm and 1x1 on front arm, this give me 3 deg, if you want 2.5, use 2x2 a rear and 1x1.5 on front.

is this clearer?

Back 10-15 yrs ago, I used to race 1/10th 235mm gas on-road(BMT, Serpent Impact, Picco Integra, etc). The ball diffs we used had adjustments for both the slip and actual differential action. So you could adjust the diff quite loose without inducing any slip. Granted, the diffs were rather large and heavy.... but they were works of art when you assembled and set them correctly.

All ball diffs slip just a bit since what is locking is the balls onto the diff plates. Even if it is for less than a tenth of a second, they will slip as it tries to engage. The design is great for the AE ball diffs. They have always been the best in the market IMO. Gear diffs just work better 99% of the time.

Don't be afraid to go super light on the rear oil. 15W is the magic in the Photon, and the Xray guys like it light, too.

The teeth in the photon gear are smaller then the specR gears. The same oil will have different effects on handling.

That would be true for the Upro piece of junk, but most Photon users long ago started running a true Yokomo BD5 gear diff or the SpecR BD5 diff, initially in the front, then later in the rear as well. Same internal gear set and same 40T pulley as this new diff from SpecR, just a slightly modified housing so it's a drop in fit. In fact, it used to be common practice to mod the SpecR BD5 diff for the TC6 by shaving the outer housing where the bearing rides to get a proper fit. With this new diff a drop in, should be no worries.

Therefore it stands to reason that there's no good reason NOT to try going as light in oil as has been successful in other cars out there in anyone's testing. Gear diffs have been around for a long time. Seems like this sudden resurgance is caused more by the availability of good cheap ones than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I have and run gear diffs, depending on conditions and set up, but a gear diff is NOT a cure-all for everything. It simply has different properties, and requires a different approach to set up and tuning and is not the magic win, front and/or rear. In fact, I have found that my my modified SpecR with white gears runs smoother than my true Yokomo diff, and is more consistent. I prefered running the gear diff outside. Will have to reasses for carpet season.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program: Let the gear-gasms continue!

any setup for carpet medium traction for 17.5 blinky?

I don't have a sheet filled out but here's the gist of it.

FRONT

14.5 Reflex spring/40wt/Reflex piston
Gear diff w/500k
Reflex camber mount - long link, 1mm on each black ballstud
1.5 mm droop, 5mm height, 1* toe out
6* caster, 1.5* camber

REAR
1b-1b
12.5 Reflex spring/40wt/Reflex piston
Gear diff w/AE 60 shock oil
Reflex camber mount - short link, 1mm inside 3 mm outside black ballstud
2mm droop, 5mm height, 3* toe in
2* camber

On Sweep 32s. The other adjustments you can make regarding track size and layout, but that should be a good start. Slipper spool/ball diff also works well enough to start with this setup. I also ran only 4 screws on upper deck - car NEVER got loose.

Used the new SpecR TC6 diff today from RSD and doesnt leak one drop! 45W oil.

Alittle light sanding on the back of gears, per the instructions, and RSD orange oring. Butter smooth. Its a great product.
