Any time there is talk of 'tightening' the body rules or a new body is or isn't added to the list there is a great amount of crying and hand wringing. You can't have it both ways, super realism will drive prices and some will leave because 'their' body is not legal. Open rules will have lower prices in some cases but others will decry the lack of realism. What is an organizer to do? Just requiring a minimum body weight is enough to cause some to grab torches and pitchforks. True that open rules will initially drive prices lower but over time prices will increase due to opportunities as a result of demand.. eg.. now that non licensed bodies have taken a foothold in this class, Bitty, Montech etc can ask for higher prices.. and you will pay because you have convinced yourself your saving $ when you’re really not. When TC started back in the 90s what do you think the lids looked like? Initially it was touring cars such as BMW, Mercedes eg DTM cars and down the line it morphed into what it is today. Thats how and why this class was born as RCGT. Had the organisers denied the PF McLarenish body a few years back, we wouldn’t be faced with a class dominated with lookalike Hyper cars. Instead the likes of Bitty, Montech, etc would have been incentivised to license their bodies to make sales… eg Killerbody, Carisma came out of nowhere and are producing scale bodies. Have you seen the bodies available for drift cars? Tons of licences GT bodies. |

It’s funny how we talk about the difference in cost of licensed and unlicensed bodies when the average cost of a kit in this class now cost $600+ for chassis alone. True that bodies are consumables, but so are parts.. got an X4 yet? break any parts? In fact in a year, tires cost me more than bodies, as I can use a body for almost a whole year.

I think a class like this requires a “generous” body list to include drivers and not exclude. There is nothing wrong with running a Bwoah with swirly multicolored airbrushed liveries or a Tamiya NSX with period correct Castrol decals. We can gripe all we want but there are rules. There are tons of things folks do we don’t like but we should focus more on the stuff we like and just do them for ourselves.

Hopefully their first generation Ford GT body will be available again soon. I prefer that to the latest version made by PF. A real classic. |

Interesting to note, 20 years ago, Tamiya bodies used to still be $40-45 still. Despite inflation, quality has remained the same and the going prices for the bodies has stayed about the same about 20 years later.
Meanwhile, HPI and Protoform bodies, $22-25 back then.....are now $35-40ish. |
You left out the most hyper of them all- HPI Zonda!

I have a bad habit of hoarding bodies. I need to go through my collection and sell some. I know that I have an HPI BMW M3 body. I am pretty sure that I have an HPI Ford GT40 body as well.
Theres a virtual estate auction taking place this month from a collector in North Dakota that passed. He had around 400+ nib kits, boxes of original body sets, all together 1000+ items. 2 days in and some crazy bids have been placed. |
