well a little late, but I did finally get a motor sponsor for the USVTA Nationals for the IROC class...now that's 10 motors just like the 10 motors from Novak for the Pro Invitational Class...maybe it will solve some issues....but who knows...this could be a solution for the bigger USVTA events , but it would be hard to do for weekly club racing

And I brought it for my Mini for TCS racing.

A new carpet track opened up close enough that I would like to race there. But I run VTA, and the track only has GT (and regular touring car classes). So I'm stepping up my TC4 to run GT. Due to financial reasons I cannot race often. I really don't want to show up at the track to find half of the racers have these 24K $150 motors to race a class that was started to have fun. At that point, why should I even bother?

I'll grant you, I'm an outlier. I don't represent a large number of racers. But if we're trying to grow the class and the hobby in general, there needs to be something to better attract racers like me. If I'm priced out of the hobby, where are new racers going to come from?

Your reedy should be more than Able to handle any motor except one and it's not a Trinity ...

Tested the Killerbody Lancia Stratos last night.. I had to modify the front and remove the from chin spoiler. Body handled extremely well.

Even if the motor is handout, there are still variances in the build quality. At some events, you are able to purchase additional handout motors. If that option is available, I would be the first one to buy a few hand out motors at the event and dyno them to get the best one. I did this before even back in the TCS 540 silver can days to win the Canadian TCS.
If the club allows a $50 hobbywing to be run. I would buy like 10 and dyno them as well and sell off the rest on ebay. You can stop racers from doing this. No matter even if you spec a motor, there are always differences in tolerances.
One good way to prevent this is to have a club have 10 handout motors (timing locked and sealed). Drivers pick a number and thats the motor they are given for that round. After the round, it is collected, and numbers are picked again for the next heat and so forth, going into the finals. So no driver has control which motor they get, and it is will make racing a lot more fair. Problem is the time to organize, allow drivers time to pick and install the motor and return the motor after a round. But in the end, it becomes cheaper for everyone to participate in that class. Perhaps an additional fee of $5 could be added to offset the cost of the club buying 10 spec motors for USGT. IF there are multiple heats of USGT, you can stagger the heats in between mod, stock to allow drivers to shuffle the motors around. Just an idea.

not going to happen....constantly changing motors thur out the day?...time time and more time....great idea in a perfect world, but I can not see this....

also what has to be looked at is the racers that travel....so we here at Thunder go with the HW for $50 each...so we buy 20?....and one Sunday we end up with 30 entries?...then what...or reverse it...a club buys 20 motors and only get 5-6 racers?...wasted money....and when we travel isn't different clubs using different spec motors...

its to much guys...lets roll with it and fall of 2017 revisit this if its an issue

I have kinda been a round a little while, and seen a little bit. SO yeah, you can buy 10 motors and dyno them all to get a good one. No one will stop you. I'm sure there are guys buying 4 $150 dollar motors right now trying to get the best.

Nothing is going to be perfect. We might not even do anything. We are aware that there are downsides to every scenario.

I totally agree with both Myron and Rob, there is no easy answer or even one that applies to most scenarios. Racing anything creates this situation period. Pursuit of the best motor, chassis, battery, body, and every other conceivable advantage will not stop.

Unfortunately, recent advances in motor technologies has finally found it's way into the 21.5 class and ultimately the USGT class.

Technology is probably not the right word. There is no new or advanced technology in any of the new motors. The performance gain is achieved only by reducing dimensions.

But I understand what you meant.

Then in the fall of 2017 we will again be buying new motors because today's best won't be competitive anymore.

Right now is the time to adopt a rule, even if it only sets the minimum resistance to what the latest motors have.

I will mark my calendar and re-post this in one year if we haven't done anything about the problem.

I guess I just don't see it as a problem as long as its available to everyone....if only the Trinity and TSR team drivers could get them, then yes....but they sold out across the board from 25.5 to 13.5...and even some mod motors.....all of those didn't go to team guys...plenty average joes got them too

You are partially correct. It won't be a problem for drivers who get their motors for free. It will be a problem for those of us who are on a budget.

The net result of inaction will be to favor the manufacturers, while leaving no one to represent the average racer. That may not be the intention, but it will certainly be the result. And I can't think of a better way to turn both existing and potential racers away from the hobby.

I typically don't post on opinion related topics but I'll make one post and then go back to being an observer....

Darkside hits the nail on the head in my opinion. So long as it is available to everyone, I don't see it as a problem.

If I can afford the newest of everything, I will buy it an not apologize. If I can't afford it, I will happily run what I have and I won't expect to finish at the top of the order. I'm pretty sure that none of us pay our mortgages with our RC winnings. I don't have to finish on the podium to have fun. Some of the most fun nights of RC racing I have had have been at the back of the A-main. And if one of the guys that typically run the B-main buy some horsepower AND can control it, more power to them (pun sorta intended there....)

I appreciate the hard work that Rob and Kevin have put into this class and I will race and support whatever is decided in the end. I think way too often folks get caught up with the competitive side of things and lose track of the reason we do this....it is still for fun right? My finishing order does not determine my ability to have fun. I simply want my car to handle well and to drive a flawless race. If I can do that, I'm perfectly content, even if someone dropped a load of cash to finish ahead of me.

One more point, I am not an occasional racer. I race every single weekend and typically do OK. Even with racing every single weekend, year round, I never expect to be the best or beat the best. For anyone that IS an occasional racer, even with the highest horsepower available, the chances of A-maining it amongst a group of consistent racers is not likely and I would hope could still have fun simply by wheeling the car around the track clean and consistently. A crash free night is often the least costly kind of night and that coincides with a fun night most of the time IMHO.

Back to my couch as an observer.....

As Kevin said, there are some ideas we are looking at. I can tell you, if we mandated a motor, there would be a ton of complaints because it would not be what someone's personal preference was.
There is a lot of content value in the above post. Personally, I can't put into proper words just how many racers either snubbed their nose or complained here in FL about the NOVAK motor in USVTA. We went round and round about USVTA vs ROAR rules, but both sides often complained about the motor.

I've also been doing this for about 30yrs and I've seen many, many people spend a whole lot of money trying to gain in advantages with spec equipment, and don't believe for a minute that the spending will stop. Heck, it's going on right now, just not as obvious as paying straight up $150 for a motor.

I will tell you that before this latest advancement hit, I was at a very recently held national event and a racer told me they bought 10 motors to get some of the best. So, on the other side of the coin, one very good $150 motor may put some racers towards the front of the pack that were previously being out spent or "out sponsored" with motors.

Spec or no spec, the big spenders will still out spend you, and the fast guys will still be fast guys. While some may look for "budget" racing, others want to win regardless of cost.
