I race 1:1 scale cars with the SCCA and am a corner worker as well, working primarily at Road Atlanta. A few years back, I got to see the behemoth tractor trailers race (like the one that CBear3 posted). I was very ill-at-ease in the corner station as these things seemed to be capable of coming to join us in the station at speed.
On a somewhat related note, Nissan used to have a factory road racing pickup team. Some of them are still around and are raced in ITT (Improved Touring - Truck) in the Atlanta Region. Here is an example...

There were other manufacturers as well!

New Class - USTT - US Touring Trucks. Have to use a 2wd 1/10 buggy for RWD realism (similar to the old AE DS).

I auto-crossed a yellow 75 & 77 Datsun pickup in the AZ region for about 6-7 years from the mid-70s up to the early 80s, running in Sierra Vista and in Phoenix a couple of times....all at a time when racing trucks was laughable.....I know I was there watching it, on the receiving end.

Best part was 3/4 of the field got the butt handed to them by a Datsun pickup with a bone-stock engine. .....

The RX-7 ready to roll. The whole body was sand blasted to give it the flat paint look.
Also pic of the chassis with some clean wiring.

Heres mine. Its simple but I didnt spend alot of time since the body was damaged during shipping and I needed something to use for racing. Looks cool on the track though.

Yea I was thinking that too after I made the post. The A-arms are not TCXX and the sway bar mounts are an AE give away. I use those on my TCXX and TC on road cars and all of my oval cars.

Plus I need to try out different gearing to see if it would help me in our slow infield section.

Needless to say I was relieved to see the temp gauge under 160 degrees during this past weekends races.

Thanks for your input!!!
Let me know how it goes. My guess, however, is that at 5.5+ FDRs going down a tooth won't make the car accelerate faster enough than it already does to off set the loss of top end speed. Unless its a really very tight track, the motor at 5.5FDR is probably at max RPM most of the time anyway. If I'm wrong, it certainly won't be the first time
