Hey Ark,

Am I going to have to get new 48P spurs or will the 48P Kimboroughs from the TC be fine?

Kimbroughs will work, they just have smaller holes to get your tip through.

I spent less than ten minutes to make mod.

Very nice. Thanks for proving it can be done.

Kobiwan:: I used the Kimbrough for this mod. I am sure there are other spur brands you can use. Just be sure to leave something between the teeth and the hole you make so it remains firm. You don't want a soft spot. The pinion may stretch/crush the teeth with the torque these BL motors put out.
Try RW.

Ok, I made another change. I can fit a 47 pinion with a HB 110 spur. With the motor at its maximum adjustment and the pinion adjusted away from the motor so it does not make contact with the motor mount... a 110/47 combo is a 4.56 final ratio.

With the pinion out a bit, alignment with the spur is not possible. Not with my fat pinions. So I made a 2mm spacer for the spur and I then had alignment with proper mesh.

Don't flame me, but the screw behind the spur is blocked. I had to tighten the visible screw once proper mesh was made then lift the spur tightening the last screw. Sorry! The extra steps of removing the upper deck and lifting the spur is good for ya! All this for the desired final ratio with a spec 17.5 class. With this spacer and the smaller 96 spur... I won't bother guessing the possible pinion size.

Take note, I was able to use the same screws for the spur. But, if a thicker spacer is used, longer screws may be needed and avoid contact with the front belt pulley, it would not be good. I had plenty of space between the screws and front belt pulley.

Now at one time, I recall seeing really thin pinions... they would make all that I did moot.

Here I tried a larger 55 pinion with the 96 spur. The motor is slid forward. I wanted to see if the pinion would make contact with the lower part of the motor mount... it did not. Notice the gap in the spur and pinion. Final ratio is 3.4. Where would anyone need more???

OK, what are you saying, that in fact you CAN'T get at the back motor screw as you stated on the previous page in post #800 ?

At a certain point as the pinion gets larger, the tool will not meet the screw through the spur. Removing more from the spur is obviously not good, so it is simpler to remove the top deck and lift the spur out of the way enough to tighten the screw. Not a big deal at all.

Again, this is all for Spec 17.5. I don't plan to run it so I am not affected, but I am now prepared to.

OK, lets get this straight. In post #800 you show a wrench going through a 96t spur with a 49t pinion not quite properly meshed up. Is the tool ON the screw and capable of tightening it WITHOUT removing the top deck and lifting the spur ?

You are correct, that scenario in that post worked. If you used a pinion larger the tool would not meet the screw.

My recent post was to see what I could do if I moved the pinion and spur 2MM.

There are two, really one obstacle to deal with... The motor mount. Lifting the spur is not a big deal.

Again, this is to see what was possible for running Spec timing with a 17.5. If I first had arrived to the last change, the spacer for the spur, I would not have bothered putting holes in the spur. Removing the top deck and lifting the spur is simpler to me.
