Re: crc and speedmerchant...
Originally posted by Nexus i couldn't find it in previous posts... What is the relationship between these 2 companies? I thought I read that at somepoint they were the same company and at some point split up... The Speedmerchant Rev3 and the CRC Carpet Knife v3.1 seem very similar. I have a CRC which I like, but som say the Speedmerchant is a superior chassis. One of these days I'll buy one and see which one works best for me. E |
They might seem similar however, the difference of their details is huge.
Front end (since its the most obvious): the Rev. 3 includes the old style front end, which is extremely simple and tweak free. The new style front end included in the CRC is very hard to built correctly. It binds in every place, the castor is never even on both sides (if you set them up with equal shims), and it tweaks and gets easily ruined, not a fun time. Rear end pivot: The difference might seem tiny however, its very important. The rev. 3 uses side links that are adustable to make sure that the rear end pivots smoothly and equally on both sides. The CRC uses un-adjustable side links, and instead makes the adjustment directly at the pivot, and is held in place by friction when a nut is tightened down (not very confidence inspiring in an accident, since it can move). Also the CRC has sky high roll centers because it needs ballstuds to mount the side-links. a high roll center makes the car much more difficult to drive as well as slower. The reason it does this (and stay with me here, its kinda bad explanation... sorry its been a long day, lol), is because it allows the chassis to transpher the weigh of the car in a corner, so it commits to the corner, and makes it feel heavier and not nearly as nible (its much harder to drive because you cannot just throw the car into a corner, you have to set up for it). Sometimes a decently high roll center is good (and the Rev. 3 has three different heights, and you could make more if you wanted to), however the CRC is more than double the height of the meduim Rev. 3 one, and thats why the CRC drivers that i have talked to have as of late run side links almost identical to Speedmerchants to get their roll center down. (WOW thats a long paragraph, lol) damper tubes: the CRC are aluminuim, which in a crash will bend, they are also much heavier (and thicker). The Rev. 3 uses very durable and consistant (they are all machined) damper tubes. Just and FYI the new ones are all black and are much better than the old ones (which had some white, either plungers or ballcups) which were made by bolink. I have done alot of testing with bolink, crc and speedmerchant tubes and found the Speedmerchant ones to be the best. Also the Rev.3 has adjustable battery position, which is a great tuning aid, and huge in 12th scale (much more so than even in sedan). I should really type this up and make the explanaiton finished and then just paste it onto the forum when anyone asks, lol. :D If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!:) |
what battery positions are better for which situations/conditions?
Thanks |
In stock I like to run the batts forward to give me more steering (I like ALOT of steering, lol). In mod when I want the car to be more consistant and easier to drive I will move them back, since it will give the car a more planted stable rear end.
Its basically a way of enducing a handling charactistic without changing the suspenion. In full scale racing, espically f1, teams always try to build the lightest car possible so that they can put the weight (as for the car to be legal) wherever they want. The Rev. 3 allows you to do this. |
can someone hook me up with part numbers for a complete "old skool" front end? Ive been wanting to try that on my yok for mod. Thanks

They have them here : www.teamspeedmerchant.com

Apples and Apples
I'd like to put my two cents in on the CRC vs Rev3 discussion. I have both cars and find them both to be great race cars. I usually run both cars in practice and thier performance is generally about the same. I most often use the Rev 3 for the race because I have the indestructable Niftech pods on it and I have found the Red Knife pods to be too bendy. Sure, I could change the pods but then the Knife wouldn't be so pretty.
Last Saturday I tried some setup changes on the Knife and it was the best handling 12th car I've ever driven. I was quite pleased with it in the race. Now I need to try the same setup on the Rev3. Much of the talk here is about how the Rev 3 is such a vastly superior car, but that's not my experience. All of the roll center and link stuff is true but not as big a difference as some would lead you to believe. The CRC is a very competetive car and the factory support is unsurpassed. Bottom line-they're both great cars. Now, when Doug sends my Quad 12..... O'D |
another question....can you use the same steering blocks/knuckles thats on the dynamic sus. with the old skool? My yok has the trick alum axles that can be set for trailing or leading positions and the knuckles are different also. I like these better because they use larger bearings. just wondering....thanks for the help

And nw add into the mix the BRP Super car that a bnch of local guys are trying. Its basically a 12L3 with a chassis and rear pod machined by past World Champion Bud Bartos. It looks fast!! Bud TQ'd Masters with it at the Halloween Classic.
But I am a Rev3 fanatic!! Its all I want to run in 12th scale. |
Quad 12?
I'm new here and new to carpet racing. Can some one fill me in on who makes the quad 12 and what's special about it.
Thanks Jeff |
odpurple: just wondering, what set up are you running on your CK?
Also try running running low roll center cones on your rev. 3 and tell me it doesnt make a noticable differnce, lol. You had to add a little bit of steering since it doesnt transpher the weight like the medium ones, but the car is much smoother and easier to drive. Now thats just around 2mm, the CRC's are at least 5mm + higher than the meduim Rev. 3 ones. Yes, you can set the car up around that, however its not the easiest way to go, or the way to make the car the easiest to drive fast. baboon- they do use different axles, sorry. Speedmerchant makes trick alumuim ones (that are lightened)... |
