Test drive
A friend kindly let me take some laps with his spool equipped car this weekend. Truth be told, I didn't like it much. Apparently he didn't either because his diff went back in for qualifying and racing. The spool car car did turn realky hard (which neither of us expected) and it drove hard off the corners too. So that's the good part. The downside was that the car did some really odd and abrupt mid corner stuff that we both thought would likely cause unforced driving errors. The spool test drive was interesting and honestly much better than I expected, but the spool was nowhere near as smooth or predictable as a diff equipped car. Unless and until I start getting my butt kicked regularly by spool equipped cars, I'll be taking a pass on this latest fad.

Perry I’ll take ya up on that offer! :)
I tried it a few weeks ago and really liked it. Made the car feel more stable to me but still turn in hard with more drive out of the hole. However, I’m curious how that changes on different layouts. |

Man, this spool thing has me worried. I don't think I could get it to work.
You know what might be cool? A Detroit Locker style diff, one-way bearings that would allow freewheel but lock up under power. |
well after racing on black carpet a spool is the way to go, found it worth .2-.3 per lap. I got my ass handed to me by cars with spools. you learn to drive differently with it for sure but if you get past the initial difference in driving its the only way to go

i liked the 'spool' as far as the rip it has out of the corner, but i couldnt get it to act like my F1 and have it snatch the back end around. it seemed more like a super tight diff to me.

What are the set up changes necessary to suit the chassis to the spool?

I tried a search but didn't actually come across much info of what people are using for a rotor in 12th?
have heard lots of people saying use the high strength rotor others saying use a weaker rotor and some say use a 12.3 not the 12.5 wondering if anyone knows about all this and why. |
Flygio, I increased my dual rates just a touch. It also wanted more gear. I guess with the unsprung weight of the diff off it the motor wants to rev more so I bumped up a few teeth. That coupled with more rip out of the whole and the motor was up to speed quicker.

Are you guys just running the spool for mod or 17.5 also?
|
I run it in 17.5.
In high grip where you get inside rear wheels unloading a lot, it eliminates any diffing out and helps just get it out of the hole. Be prepared to add a tooth or two on the pinion. It'll get up to speed quicker. Sorta like a holeshot device in motocross :). |
ya was running my diff as tight as I could in mod, it was like driving my 1/8 on road nitro car. so freaking fun

Some new parts for 1/12.
We've made some extremely thin shims in AISI 301. 0,2mm in order to be able to set the ride height in a very precise way. Parts are made for VBC front and rear. Of course front ones will fit any 38.5mm front end, such Associated, Roche, Xenon, Saxo and so on. For the Xray X12, we've made them for the rear. Shims are featuring a small extra area for an easy handling. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...23a942d75d.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...2b59fd6da5.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...67a33bbfed.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...9f1a7bfeca.jpg |
