If the iron is pulling the solder away from the joint that is because the solder was not flowing onto the materials to be joined because of the presence of oxides. Flux removes the oxides. Flux in the solder won't do as good a job as flux applied separately beforehand.
What sort of flux? I heard there are different types, is acidic okay on electronics?

You should not use acid flux on electronics.

I used to use "Nokorrode" brand flux when I started soldering (40+ years ago - on slot cars) but the formulation was changed sometime in the intervening years since I got into RC. The best stuff I have found that is readily available in the U.S. is Rubyfluid brand soldering paste. One place to get it in the U.S.: http://www.artsuppliesforartists.com...ring-paste.php

A tin lasts me about a year and I'm sure I do more soldering than most people. I am not sure what brands would be available in Australia.
