Ah yes, the 'melted' Gazoo Racing body. Horrible appearance. Slammed down like that for more air to the rear wing and more air on the nose as well.

Here in Pdx we ran a successfull "UF1 like" series when there was an indoor carpet. I still have my home made pit light system <3
Ive taught myself to enjoy any oppertunity to make these tires squell outdoors.
Having two kiddos to bash with is my ace in the hole since we're garanteed a class if we can make it to a track. Lol
Cheers to all keepin the F1 flame going!

So I did something. Successfully

precisely swapped the old front end with the exotek v2 independent suspension.

Does anyone have an Exotek #1862 6mm to 1/4" axle bearing adapter set laying around?

Or another solution to use a 1/4" axle in a Tamiya car? I'm not sure if any other mfg axle height adjusters are the same size.

For those of you racing F1 outdoors, do you run in the rain? if so, what tires would you use?

BullFrog 03-31-2024 04:17 PM

Not that I know of.

I do recall from a number of sources in 2021 that many were not happy with the change to foam due to rubber tire raw material shortages. The pandemic definitely impacted RC turnout for sure in 2020-2022 so it will always skew data. Honestly, I think F1 is just slowly fading out and chassis updates even from Xray are less frequent over the past few years. It is even reflected at the big indoor races in the US, coinciding with the explosion of GT12. (slower and closer racing)

Very unlikely making foam mainstream will bring the class back, it might accelerate the death. One of my local tracks does race foam F1 and I do run it, but there is a noticeable speed difference when the foam tires get thinner. Just like 1/12 scale, we'll see guys truing them down to get faster.

With that said, do what works for your club, foam or rubber.

Wow, those pre-pandemic numbers are crazy! I love both rubber and foam F1. Dan very well may be right that foam would accelerate the decline of F1, however the setup window for foam vs rubber is much bigger. It's way easier to get an F1 car working well on foam vs rubber which in theory should encourage drivers to get in to and stick with F1.

We just ran tcs a couple weeks ago and I asked one of the guys who ran F1 last year why he wasn't running this year. He said he wasn't able to get his car working well and wasn't having fun. Not sure if foam would have fixed this but it could have.

I'm not really trying to defend foam, i want F1 RC to grow so if its foam or rubber I don't care. Good discussion either way.

One more thing, Dan told me the foam tires they run in ets are Matrix brand and as of a couple weeks ago amain started carrying them. I ordered a couple sets for myself but Dan lent me a set yesterday to test and they were great. Not sure on durability but new out of the package they handle really well.

Been there with F1 when orginally started. Rubber is easier once you find the correct tires. No constant ride height adjustments. Even TC tired foam tires. But ya'll will try the foams.I'll stick with the rubber tires- Team Powers and Exotech.

Originally TCS races were on foams for the narrow F104 style cars. It was fine but there certainly was a tire size that worked best. That definitely was not a full sized tire.

We still race 21.5 on foams with the older style wide cars( think F103) and they are rockets. Going to foam is going to be faster, everything else being the same. The setup window may be wider but there are negatives that have been brought up like chunking tires, truing, maintaining ride height and roll out, etc., etc.

I was running just for fun with my old F103 and brushed set when it started to rain during race day, but soft slicks worked better than grooved ride tires. You still had to be easy with your throttle finger though.

Rob, were there any rules for the foam tires? such as a minimum dia of the tire or anything like that? What tires were you using? We have been kicking around the idea of trying foam on F1 at my home track. Thanks for any info you can give.

I stand corrected. I believe they were using Matrix tires a few years ago. Seems Contacts brand are in latest ruleset for ETS F1.

So I guess the ETS guys are truing them quite a bit since they come "thick" out of the box. The Matrix tires come at the ideal height out of the box.
