Well, let's see. The TB03 is about 30g lighter, the battery is more towards the center, and much more direct in throttle responce. I still need to do a shakedown, but it seems to have an advantage over the TA05. I hear this EVO layout has quirks in the handling characteristics, but things are a little different such as the plastic tub(flex) and the IFS. We'll see. I suggest driving a TC4 or Pro4 to get the feeling of a shaft car.

energyracing 07-02-2008 10:38 AM

I use to own a TC3, a long time ago and it was fine, I did prefer belt at the time. The TB03 will be used for TCS racing with a black can, therefor I hope the limited power will reduce the torque steer we use to experience.

But still debating.

redbones 07-02-2008 11:05 AM

Even more so, the advantage of a shaft drive using a 540type motor.

An old school debate compares shaft drives to belt drives and weighs the merits of drivetrain efficiency and throttle response against the absence of torque steer and throttle "give." For modern high power motors the debate is all but over: belt drive is better (shaft drive zealots feel free to flame on--you're all half-crocked--fun--but nuts.) But for GT3 (silver can), the arrival of the TB03 renews the argument. I look forward to next season's TCS series to see how it shakes out. It should be fun! I love the new body and have wanted to try a shaft drive car, but the TB02 was just too dated compared to the TA05. Not anymore. :tire:

redbones 07-02-2008 11:35 AM

So what's your guys take on the motor limit of shaft cars before you hit deminishing returns?

UltegraSTI 07-03-2008 06:01 AM

shaft drive has found new life in trans am where power rates are reduced either from 4cells or on lipo but w/only a 21.5 power plant. kinda like gt3 of sorts. have to wait and see. when does the R come out?

30g is nice, but i think even tamiya went to weight limits. so it might be moot pt.

R

redbones 07-03-2008 10:48 AM

less weight does have advantages, even in weight restricted races. You have more freedom of using weights to balance out the car. Naturally overweight cars does not have that option, and you can't balance the car without going way over.

energyracing 07-03-2008 12:30 PM

I just bought a TA05R of a friend, it was his spare never ran for $175.

Good choice. I ran the R for a while, then jumped over to the IFS conversion to take advantage of the bodies(NSX2007 ftw). Going to try this TB03 out of curiosity, and might switch back to TA05 if things don't go well. There are rumors of a TA06 floating around though...

Surprise! Surprise!.

Tomoyuki 07-08-2008 09:15 AM

The absence of a 2nd deck makes it look so flexy

wildpig 07-09-2008 07:57 PM

Is this available over that side of the globe already?

redbones 07-09-2008 09:04 PM

yeah, been out for about a week now.
according to the guys down there, they've beaten the TA05 records already with the TB-03 at their local track(23T class). The potential is there.
As for the pitch flex, there is some, but minimal to affect handling. Very well engineered. The steering has some slop, but that's so they can sell their hop-up option to us later (bastards).

I can't belive there isn't more info on this car!! Any further performance updates on this baby?? Surely there must be more opinions....

small option in this moment ,
titanium screw set , suspension mount ...

pgeldz 07-23-2008 02:23 PM

I think this car is gonna rock, but I haven't built it yet. Been way too busy!

ANy updates on lower range of FDRs? 3.5 is possible for 17.5 use? Internal ratio is pretty high at 2.438. :tire:

Hebiki 08-27-2008 11:45 PM

TB-03 at TCS Nats....

i qualified 4th overall in GT2 at the Tamiya TCS North American Finals. but i blew out in the mains. i believe i was the only one in the A-main with a TB-03. the rest were TA05-Rs, and IFS-Rs.

the car is very capable.

i just typed "tb03 motor mount" into google and went 2/3rds down the page in images

DA_cookie_monst 09-16-2008 02:06 AM

before I start costing out a TB03 (10.5, LiPO and foams....) will the normal spurs fit (same fitment as the TA05) so I can run 48dp?

UltegraSTI 09-16-2008 04:10 AM

so no more 'holes' but 'slots' now for the TBs motor mount, very nice. definitely points to the car on that 1. now just sit around and wait for a 'R'.

R

edhchoe 09-16-2008 08:53 AM

Why doesn't anyone make slotted motor mount for tt01? It would be just as easy.

Cool. But the wing looks to provide not much downforce compared to touring car wings?

because tamiya wants us to buy the optional racing wing set :)

Tamiya goes for scale looks, so the wing closely resembles the one on the real car. Wings that provide real downforce on an RC car don't look realistic at all -- but you'd want to add one if you're competitively racing.

pgeldz 09-16-2008 11:45 PM

Wow, that's HOT!!!

Any new stuff? How are you guys gearing for 13.5 or 21.5?

My LHS showed me that Tamiya is releasing carbon reinforced parts for the TB-03...not sure of an exact date though...

:)

DA_cookie_monst 09-28-2008 04:09 PM

before I run mine, I got to get some more shims, so I can get rid of all that horrible backlash in the gearboxes..... then it should be good!!

weekendracer_uk 09-30-2008 05:07 AM

So whats the tallest anyone has geared one of these cars ? seeing as a number of people posting on this thread seem to be wanting to run brushless setups ( 13.5 , 17.5 etc ) inclueding myself.

DA_cookie_monst 09-30-2008 06:03 AM

I just fitted a 73tooth (48dp) spur, and a 29tooth pinion (6.14:1) to have a try, but there is room to go higher on the pinion and smaller on the spur.

RW spur gears fir stright on too, which is a billy bonus!!
