Its just different. But after 10 years you would think they would improve it. With that said, I still like it even though I am still trying to get it to handle like my m03... almost there.

Do you need to trim off that much to reduce the weight?

I'm shocked to see the use of the awful Tamiya battery connectors. They must be mandatory for the TCS series. Brutal.

I wonder if all the weight trimming is necessary, especially since the second place car appears to have a stock chassis. The aluminum hubs probably negated any weight lost from hacking the chassis apart.

Quick question, I got an aluminum motor plate for my M05 with the heatsink. Is there any harm in leaving out the paper motor spacer thing?

I believe it would work best if the motor was touching the aluminum motor mount directly.

I'm a little confused by your answer. I'm not disputing it. Isn't the ID of the bearing the determinig factor? Whether the OD is 10mm or 11mm seems to be irrelevant. I used a TA03 ball diff in my M05 so the gear mesh seems to be the same and the width is the same and the gears in the gear diff are the same. I must be missing something here.

I am not saying it does fit, I just don't think the bearing OD is the reason.

leave the paper out, never used it and been running Tamiya since 89.

Hello Granpa,

The reason the TAO3 ball diff can be used in the MO5 is because they have a plastic sleeve which encompasses the 1150 bearing to make it into a 1510 size which then fits into the chassis halves.

The new MO5 ball diff is larger in diameter and uses the 1510 bearing with out the requirement for the plastic spacer.

The MO3 chassis only has a space for the diff bearing which will only accept a 1150 bearing.

The internal diameter of the 1150 bearing will not go over the diff cups on the new MO5 ball diff. The TAO3 ball diff uses a externally fitted diff cup which is smaller in diameter than the new items. The new diff is the same size as a touring car diff and uses blades. I would take photo's however the new diff is already in the car.

Thank you for the quick answer cause I was going to order 2 diffs and now will just order one. You saved me over $40 with the tax. I knew I was missing something so I had to ask.

I've never even seen a M05 ball diff, but understand that they use a blade drive ala Xray TCs. ??for ya. Could you mill out the slots in the M03 out drives and then be able to use the nylon bit that goes over the drive pins? I'm getting tired of buying new out drives, the hardened ones even, and replacing universals cause the drive pins wore out. We run a lot out here and a 15 battery day is not unusual.

Hello Granpa,

I have seen it done. The only thing you would need to to do is ensure that the opening is equal and accepts the blade you install. A friend of mine does this regularly because he is sick and tired of spending $$ on replacement diff cups. I myself have not performed this, but he swears by it. It might not be TCS legal though.

I have found that with a tight ball diff or spool the hardened diff cups are trashed in only a short space of time. I have also experienced that the MO5 runs straighter and does not pull left or right when the diff is not locked up or really tight. I have also found it steers better.

BTW,

Any brand blades can be used.

Just my opinion.

I also am looking for a decent charger. I will probably stick with Nicad for now, but move to lipo in the future. The local shop recommends a Venom charger, but I have read some questionable reviews.
