Roy, if you guys are thinking of testing these out, i wouldnt mind helping out. For the price of these things, wouldnt be a bad thing to have lying around. Surely some other company produces slower brushless motors that will be similar to silver cans.... Even if we went to crawler motors???? We already have a fixed gearing, lets look into it!

I know first hand that the Novak 17.5 is very very close to a good silver can. And after a 5 minute run it gets to about 85 degrees!

I can't actually give you an answer on that one Roy, ever since we started mini racing back in '96 we've always run Sport-Tuneds! I've never even had a silver can in my car (ironic really because I put one in this morning for carpet racing tonight!)

My best guess would be in the region of maybe 15% quicker, not 20%. Hobbywing 13t/3000 and Black Can are very very similar to each other in performance. They FEEL different, but laps times are within a few tenths of each other.

I know on my Robi dyno the black cans make about 10-15 more watts of power than the silver cans do. A strong black can was making around 90 watts, so that would make them about 10% stronger than the silvers.

I did a little number crunching on this and depending on which figures you choose for the silver can (manufacturer, retailer or end user) the difference is 10% to 20%.

So, let's go with 15%. Good call, Tony!

Thanks for the answers......I guess the next logical step is to ask (and sorry if it's already been smacked around here before:eek:!!) is if there is less variance in the 3000kv hobbywing brushless motors.....versus machine made silver or I guess black can motors (we all know you can get that "one"....that is waaaay better than the next...I believe Tony already did a test on 20 black cans....they were all over the place as I recall!!!!! Is it easier to mess with the brushless motors....to get some sorta gain??? (hey....that was 2 questions:o!!)

I run a TCS style race at the LHS.

I tech all of the cars and hand out motors that I purchased on my dime. The new 540J motors, everyone gets a different motor every week. It is logged and the motors are marked. I make everyone follow TCS race rules and it has been working out fantastic! We get 6-8 Minis running every weekend and everyone follows the rules and the racing is VERY competitive!

Here is my take after dynoing a few motors, on average you would expect motors to be around the following figures.

Silver can = 16500-17000rpm (average)
Sports Tuned = 21500-22000rpm (average)
13t/3000kv = 3000*7.2 = 21600 (theoretically)

Now you will allways get better and worse ones, I have seen Sports tuned motors over 23500rpm's and I have also seen them around 20000rpm.

The brushless motors should be a bit more consistent within the same model/manufacturer.

Is HPI X-pattern tire any good compare to Tamiya 60d S grip? I got both brand new. I may want to run in speedtech parking lot race next month and save Tamiya ones for TCS maybe...

stadium chris......love the idea....not sure if it would be as easy for us....we are averaging 20 mini's every race day....some nights quite a few more....so it would require some work to make sure each motor was marked and sent out to different drivers!!!

tp......I'm getting the idea of the rpm's and speed gains with each motor.....I guess I should have asked my question this way....if you took 20 black cans like tony did......charted them....then did the same with 20 of the hobbywing brushless motors.....what motors would have less variance between the 20???

A very easy question .. less variance in the Hobbywing system motors ... by far

And that is one of the main reasons for changing to BL minis

Has anyone heard any rumours or speculation about the upcoming TCS Mini GT class?

I'm really curious about this and can't seem to find anything about it at all.

When I was about 14/15 my old man had a 440 cortina 1:1 car painted almost exactly the same as that. When he came home from work and saw what I did to his car with a heap of rattle cans he wasn't too pleased.:cry:
