I'd say both. The piston hole size has to do with "pack". That is the speed which oil can travel through the holes. When it reaches a certain speed it almost locks up. I think that comes into play more in off road and jumping, but it effects on road as well.
You need to keep in mind the weight of the shock spring and dampening of the shock must be close or when you find a combination you like try to maintain it. If you go to heavier springs, you probably need to increase you dampening as well. It all plays together.

Not sure on HPI pistons, but when I ran Associated one piston size to the next was approximately 5 wt. of oil change. So if you went from a #2 to #3 piston you drop down 5 wt. in oil to have the same dampening effect. HPI pistons seem a little closer together between hole size so I would guess maybe only 2-1/2 wt. of oil between, but I'm sure, maybe Eric can answer that.

take care

The Speed is fine....its .11 plenty fast IMO. Surikarn(sp) used it to win the worlds so it cant be that bad. Its very good servo and the best that I have used so far.

I also run the 9550 in my pro4 and I absolutely love it. It seems faster than the specs imply, when you're driving. It's been rock solid since day one. It hasn't developed any slop at all. In fact I've never even removed it from the car.

9550 is super popular. its proven to work in pretty much all cars, by TONS of people.

but tamiya drivers as a whole use it a LOT due to the space it saves them. surikarn, jacobsen etc

The ring on the shocks that rotates on the thread, is meant to be a the top for the car to sit low. it is only meant to be heading towards the bottom, if you are trying to raise the car.

rubber tyres should be at around about 62 - 63mm rolling diamater.

the shock mounting position should be on the outer on the bottom, and on the 2nd outer on the top.

Apart fromt his, if you have done this, then you need to shorten the linkage arm that adjusts the camber. and recheck the droop settings. 6 at the front, and 5 at the rear is a consistent setting for me.
