Clean the surface thoroughly before soldering. Emery cloth, dremel and wire wheel and stainless mini brush are all usefull.

Flux
Opinions and techniques both vary; but I prefer soldering with a good flux. You may have to try more than one to find one that suits you, but I prefer more acidic fluxes. And by the way, I was trained and certified to solder on NASA satellites. Thanks; Ernie P.

I use something like this, has a tip a bit like a large felt tip pen which means you can be pretty accurate with it, and combined with my 80W Weller soldering irong I can solder a battery bar to a cell in less than 1 second

flux works great for building packs.. it allows less solder to be used, and a more solid connection.. If your having problems re soldering, you can just tin the tip with some fresh solder and it will work fine.. however you will eventually have a glob of solder.. i always yry to use as little as possible, but still have a good connection..
I also dip my solder tip in fulx before i sponge it.. seems to help it stay clean and pre tinned better..
