There is always drama.
Now we can just type it out for many to see.
Oh and this doesn't just apply to racing.

The challenge then becomes that we have to sift through dozens of pages of complaining, sarcasm, passive aggressive comments, and over generalized subjective opinions - just to find the little nuggets of inspired technical wisdom and techniques that can be directly applied to the class the we have chosen to race in.
I think it could be better.

That being said- I've learned from this thread some different tire prep techniques - as well as little technical considerations I use to take for granted (ex: reduction of rotational mass from tire wear). Every little bit matters in spec classes. Never ceases to amaze me.

I know that I make every effort to help people. I hope others do too.
I started this thread for the purpose of separating it from general information and get specific to the tires and the issues they initiate. I want the class to be successful as it is a lot of fun.
It can be challenging at times.

New to the class, and 1/12th scale in general. My car weighs 790 grams, aluminum chassis, 8000 mah battery, body is almost 60 grams. All my 1/10 scales I can meet min weights when set up for asphalt - is it the aluminum chassis? Would it be better to run a carbon chassis?

Last edited by belewis01; 02-21-2024 at 10:12 AM. Reason: should be 790g, not 290 - duh.

LOL - here you go - learn me
It's a Top Racing - some version of the Rebel from about 2015? Team Powers V4 motor, Team Powers ESC, Sanwa RX, JR servo, Sunpadow 8000 mah, Phat Racing type F body, XRay Gear diff and left hub. 7 grams added on the pod to balance left to right. Picture has foam tires on - the set of rubber tires I measured was about 20 grams heavier than foam.

Bit of a tall order, but we can try:
  1. That esc looks beefy as hell. I bet you'd save 10-15g w/a Hobbywing Stock Spec 1s (~25g).
  2. I'd be curious what that servo weighs. A Sanwa is 24g. A PowerHD M8 Pro is 28g.
  3. Ti screw kit would save you about 10g.
  4. FREE: Ditch one of the side tubes. 3-5g.
  5. Painted my Mon-Tech Akura is 40g.
  6. There's about a 15-18g difference between a new set of SJT's and a worn set.
  7. What does that gear diff weigh? Consider a ball diff w/a lightweight shaft.

Thanks for the great suggestions
ESC change is not an option at this time - I have obligations. The servo is listed at 29 grams. Ball diff and carbon axle is a good idea which I will look into. A lighter body will come after I get some laps in on this one - new to the class, so expectations are not sky high.

An easy mod for me would be a carbon chassis - I make stuff. Preliminary design work suggests 25 - 30 grams reduction. I don't know if a carbon chassis works for black carpet racing in this class.

Two of our top cars locally are carbon chassis. I race a carbon chassis in this class.

FYI - CF will raise your CG. Youre essentially taking wait off from under the equipment that doesnt change.
I would try other things first with parts and hardware before just dumping the chassis.

lighter front bumper, all aluminum screws, a 7400/7500 battery, and get rid of the heavy xray diff and you'll be under weight...
