Hudy is like Apple, a few good product build up their reputations then it becomes a symbols that people pay extra to get the tag on everything they make. If this is not entirely true, at least this is their strategy. I am not hudy hater, I owe their setup station of touring and pan car, as well as some other tool but their auto tire truer are just expensive for me to want to try my luck on how long they last. Many use auto truer of other brand with good results, get some other brand to save some money for tires

Two reasons:
1 - The production runs are small for a niche item in a niche market, so to recoup startup manufacturing costs (everything from machining to marketing), the price increases to make it worthwhile to produce the product.
2 - 'Because they can' (capitalism and all).

I've had the Hudy manual crank model for the past 10-15 years. No complaints however, to an earlier point, it is literally just a cheap-o DC motor with an arbor on it. For my .02, the quality of the model is derived from the cutting slide - tight tolerances, adjustable and premium materials.

And the reputation. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that their hudy truer sucked or was junk or whatever. I’ve had mine since 2004. Still going strong.
