Guys. I tried two gear diff tonight on carpet but it just lost drive/sounded awful with any serious throttle. Are you to just remove one pair of gears cones and their rod leaving the other pair and rod as I did or am I missing something? Thanks. Phil

Sounds like maybe it wasn't shimmed quite right? jumping teeth when it went under a big load.

what shimming do you recommend outside of what stock 4 gear uses?

When it comes to Shimming I take the thinner type and bow them dramatically and then slip them on so the bowing faces away from the component because it places resistance on 2 points, and in this case, when you close the gear case onto it, it should apply even pressure to both sides and the diff can move slightly side to side without ever going too far. This also prevents binding you can encounter by shimming the traditional way.

I also use this technique on my steering systems so there is zero play and I never have a dead zone where the car can veer slightly to either direction. On my cars straight is straight.

Not sure if you guys can picture it but if enough people want I can put together a diagram later.

Due to the new Schumacher Cactus, Eos carpet and hard slipper setting, we are seeing some other strange things. We do have broken diff gear axles. These tend to break at the machined part of it.
When using only 2gears, we use a cut hinge pin instead.
Maybe your is brokentoo.

2 gear diff?

thanks guys. Will check that out. Any alternative to takign two gears out for more rotation? lighter oil perhaps

yeah if the option is possiblity of broken gears versus just going lighter with 2 gear, I think i'll go 2 gear till I hear more on this.

was going to do 7K 2 gear, so maybe 3 or 4K 4 gear?

Thanks. I took it apart again and was able to identify more shims were present that stock/ manual suggests but managed to get one more in on the one side of the outdrives so we will see if that helps. thanks.

Nothing broken or no chipped teeth though?

Cain 01-14-2018 10:43 AM

okay so in general if we are doing 2 gear do we need to add more shims?

sickpuppy1 01-14-2018 11:08 AM

I would say shimming is more critical to make sure there is minimal play between gear sets.

When will the cars be available? Everything 2wd is either out of stock or discounted?

Antimullet 01-14-2018 01:55 PM

No issues with me running 2 gear with the normal shims per kit. That’s in high grip carpet.

Finally got my new to me YZ-2 DTM all ready to hit the track...can't wait for next weekend to try this thing out. So far, my other buggy is a B6, I really like the look and feel of this car. I am hoping it is just as smooth on the track.
