This can certainly be construed as "within the tolerance of 10%" for a noob to try out and experiment with. You wouldn't call them similar, but I would. Your definition of "similar" is different from my definition of "similar," and your opinion versus mine. I ran both and had absolutely no difference in lap times, and I doubt he would, either.
In the spirit of this forum, which is intended to champion the camaraderie of the hobby, perhaps you shouldn't overanalyze an innocent statement made by someone who is merely trying to help out a fellow hobbyist who had some basic questions.

Well I ran my new 3.0 e for the first time this week and man it is an awesome car...my only complaint is the battery straps....they are too long!!! Cept the one that goes front to back....the two shorter ones are still way long...any alternatives??? Also any good ideas for mounting the tekin esc switch?

Bingo! I know when we talk among experts, we can give actual gear ratios--like "3.00 to 3.07" and stuff like that--when talking about spurs and pinions. But when helping out newbies, we always try to keep it very simple as to not confuse them. That way they can try stuff and get a feel for what works at their particular track. Glad we are on the same page! Thanks!

. I decided to go with the 45/15. They both felt the same to me but i could get a better mesh with the 45.

Alright guys, Im picking one of these up and air have a few questions. 1 any reason to run the stock pistons over the 1.3x8 machined Losi pistons? Does the motor mount allow for 4mm screws into the motor?
#1569
I built the car with stock 5x1.4 pistons up front and it felt way overdampened. I had some tekno 8x1.3's lying around so i'll be trying those this weekend. I felt my buddy'a car with the 8x1.3's and it felt much better.

How are you liking the 3.0 at your track there?

Did you use actual TLR oil or the kit oil? This may cause it to feel stiff. The 5 x pistons for the front and rear are really meant for indoor. You will likely like the 8 x setup for outdoor better if that is where you are playing.

I'll find out on my maiden run this weekend.
I took your advice and used oil not included in the kit. The rear feels great, but the front with 1.4x5 pistons and 37.5 ae oil felt overdampened still. I put in tekno 8x1.3's up front last night with 40wt ae oil and it feel much better on bench. I'll be putting it to the test this weekend. Thx for the help.
