Default NOVAK GETTING TO HOT!!!!! PLEASE HELP

I bought a roller losi 4x4 shortcourse and a combo novak new motor 550 4.5(5000 kv and used esc. I am was using a 15 tooth pinion and my temps were getting to 178 it had a double fan so i put a castle 1/10 fan thinking i would help cause the fan is much closer to the motor. it didnt not improve i lowered the pinion to a 12 tooth and still getting hot 162. WHAT DO IT DO??? PLEASE HELP!! I have friends that tell me to put the esc back to factory setting and also decreas the timing i dont know where to start.

Thanks

What Novak esc? And when you say temps, on the esc? What track type, or bashing?

To be honest 162 is not that bad... After how many minutes does it get to 162 (whats ambient temp?)? And also, If you have a fan on the motor, that would help also. What I have noticed is when you play with pinions, you have to check both the esc and motor as lowering the pinion will make the esc warmer and adding teeth will make the motor hotter (not always...) And saying you have a long back straight I would also make sure you do not under gear too much.. You went from a 15t to a 12t, try smaller adjustments.

Isn't the stock pinion a 14 on those? They pair a much lower kv castle motor with the 14? That's the scte right? My friend drives one so going off memory on the gearing.

Like tamak said, 15 to 12 is like having the grand canyon between those gear ratios. Go 14 maybe even 13.

Get your car geared correctly without the fan. Add fan for more protection, not a bandaid for incorrect gearing.

No timing, grear correctly without fan. Got it to 160 after 10 min of driving? Install fan and add a little timing and you will be fast and safe.

178 with a fan is way off. Geared correctly I am running at 160 after a 7 min heat. I add a fan and I go to 140 after 10 min. If you took that fan off you would be able to cook a steak on that motor

Double check to make sure there is no binding happening in the drive train too. Even if it is new doesn't mean it was put together correctly.

14 to 13 I would think. The castle motor they use with the rtr is a 3800kv 4 pole and you are running a 4.5 2 pole. The difference between those two is big. Not sure where the Novak suggested 12 is coming from but that may end up being correct in the end. EDIT: tower suggested, that may be right, you'll have to see what's right for your setup.

Want to get a motor that is up to the task of the heavy scte? Tenshock 411 4600kv 4 pole 550 can $90. 2000 watts compared to the ballistic 4.5's 890 watts

Nano lipo's are great batteries.

I would say a 13 tooth would be good.

I ran a 14 tooth with no fan and came off at 145 after 10 minutes, 160 on a hot day, same motor also...

I am running 12t pinion with zero timing and no fans. A 6 minute main takes the motor to 160. It's ran that temp for months with no issues.
