So I have a friend who's son keeps nuking motors in his SC10 RS. He has gone thru a 10.5, a 13.5 and 2 17.7's. He has been running the gearing that AE printed in the manual with 5-8 degrees bell timing. All the motors were Tekin Redline's and he has been running a tekin RS Pro Speedo.
Looking at the HotWire settings, it doesnt look to agressive. Boost is 40 degrees in 2 degree incremants with a .5 second delay. Low drag brake and moderate brake. I am trying to help him out but its been 4 motors in 2 months. The track is low to medium traction. The car handles great but just eats motors. Drivetrain is fairly smooth, slipper is working. Im at a loss and he is getting frustrated dropping coin on motors every couple of weeks.

The first 17.5 was after 5 minutes came off at 190. we dropped 2 teeth on the pinion and the second heat and main it came off at 150. 2 weeks later, same track, same setup, truck was put away and never touched, same thing. 1st heat was 200. dropped 2 more teeth and the second heat it came off at 160 but was so slow it was uncompetitive. So he put in his back up 13.5 and ran 5 minutes of practice. geared it to run 150 and he ran 2nd in the main coming off at 145. Again 2 weeks later, same'ol same'ol, same motor, 1st heat came off at 195.

I cant figure this thing out. I have had the same Tekin 17.5 motor in my truck for 2 years and its never been over 145. Im running what the book says gear wise with 10 degrees endbell timing and a fairly agressive boost timing with an RS Pro.

Any suggestions or if anyone has seen this before, chime in so we can get the problem nailed.

What lipo's? Gear mesh? Cold solder joints? Wire guage? Outdrives worn? Rear wheel nuts too tight or too many shims?

I can tell you I was not as good as here after my 3 months of racing. At least i think so, that was in........86'. lol Hell yes, I took her out for ice cream after wards. She lapped the points leader in that race. She only got third in the series, but finishing the series with a win and lapping the points leader was leet. I have been trying to get her to run her own race for a while. She worrys too much about what everyone else is doing. I though she did really well. After the race she told me she won, because she listen to me and relaxed. I must say, I am pretty proud. I have no sons, and never figured my daughter would want to race with me.

this is a pic last night of her new truck and trophy. She gets her looks from her mom.

Does the kid even need all that timing and boost? my kid ran my 10.5 last night. I had it at 15 deg boost, no turbo, 20% drag. she ran 21/84 gearing. It came of the track at 105 deg. I ran the same truck (minus the hello kitty body) and it was 107 deg. She got the truck used and i did a complete tear down and made the truck butter smooth. sure lots of the screws and hinge pins backed out, so i had to tighten the truck after ever run, lol. but the motor was cool. Also, she was running a brushless hobbies 120 amp esc, not sure if that helps or not.

what side are you running your diff nut on? I am running ceramics and have not noticed any issues. I put them in, tighened until the screw stopped and back it off an 8th. then held one wheel and went 1/4 throttle for about 30 seconds, then tighten it a hair and set the skipper. stayed tight all night. btw, I run the diff screw on the motor side. people say this helps.

I run mine on the slipper side. I had to back it off 1/2. It stills feel tight. I stopped it from loosening up by putting blue lock tight in the t nut. It really sucks to spend 30 bucks and it messes up. I know if they give me fits I am throwing them in the can and go back to carbide. About how much life span do ceramic diff balls last.

I burnt my ESC in a run last weekend. It's running fine for months without any changes but not this weekend. It's just stops and follows by magical white smoke, so I wonder what happened? It's Sidewinder v2 with 1406 5700kv motor. Gearing is at 16/87.

Make sure tht you have it installed on the right side and also while breaking in period that u get the nut bottomed and smooth at the same time. So how to do this is after efery period of seating the balls and rings cont to do that process until the diff I set to bottom. And I hope this helps my friend

I really dont know if he "needs" all that timing but there are some larger jumps you on the track that are very difficult to make consistantly when it is turned down. I kinda went thru the truck and checked to make sure everything spins freely with and without the wheels on minus the bearings in the tranny ( I think I will look at these next as well as refill the diff). Nothing caught my eye and besides normal wear on the bones and out drives, everything was good. He resoldered everything to eliminate that, the lipos are Venom 30C's he has 3 different ones that have been used. Just looking for sugestions or something to light up the bulb above my head.

Keep in mind this was durring the summer June, July and August, and with the weather cooling a little, it could be jsut cause of the weather. But Im just spit balling that one.

And tell your little Girl Congrats. Thats really cool for her to Win the last race running away and a great finish for the series. One Proud PAPA you are!
