Best 17.5 brushless motor for off road?
#16
Most people are running a higher FDR then me. This is a short technical off road track. I went to a 6.6 and it was way peppier but wouldnt rev out on the straight even. So I went back down to whine up more on the straight. Ill go back up. Ive checked my temps and it comes off the track at like 120 after 5 minutes and about 150 after 10

i've got the same SP17.5 on my RB5. i geared it at 6.2FDR, cranked up the timing on my RSPro to 100 and it was still a shocker.
i swear, no better than a 540 silvercan and certainly slower than my co27.
if u read the onroad threads, the onroad guys are gearing the 17.5 at crazy FDRs like 3+.
i'm going to try 5.1FDR next time.

What pinion and spure size are you using?

was on 76/32. going to try 68/35 soon.
i don't want to lose the slipper too because our tracks are dusty dirt types.

denny - the guys recommending 7.5 - was that for brushed motors? Or, they could just be pulling your chain to keep you slow
You gotta gear 13.5 and 17.5 BL motors really high. Even a 10.5 Novak I have in my B4, I've bumped up the pinion size pretty high.
Gear it so you do hit full speed about 3/4 way down the straight. You want corner to corner speed more than top-speed. Racing is won in the corners (typically).

what gearing for a novak 17.5 in a t4 im thinking 31/76?
also do you think the trinity 17.5 duo or the novak 17.5 as a better competitive motor?
thanks

Well I am running a novak 17.5 and my fdr is 5.0. Running a 72 spur, 36 pinion....I am going to put a 38 pinion in it soon as my motor/esc only gets to about 50c. That will give me a fdr of 4.7! You have to run brushless near the limit to get the best out of it. In comparison to the lrp, speed passion etc, I would have to say it is fairly close. No wonder you are getting sluggish performance running @ 6.9 fdr. How hot is your esc/motor getting?

I've got 29/78 gearing (6.99 FDR) with a Tekin 17.5 in my T4 at Trackside. I had 30/78 but I had some motor temp after 15 minutes of practice, plus the 29/78 just felt better on track.
Spend your money on practice and tires, not a different 17.5. The Speed Passions that are sold at Trackside work just fine.

Hey Aaron the tires are new and it gets plenty of traction. It just keeps feeling slower and slower. I dont know if its getting worse or what. Im going to be buyin a new motor regardless. The new Orion Vortex or Trinity Pulse are what Im going with. If that new LRP X12 comes out soon Ill have a real tough choice ahead of me.
