The RC10CE and the JRX-2 are still formidable vehicles. Both of those vehicles are what many of the 2WD buggies are still based off today...
But getting back to the subject, it takes both to win, a good car/setup and a good driver... You can offset one or the other slightly, but it's a 50/50 kinda of a deal.
"Best" Setup = 50%
Best Driving Technique = 50%
Score = 100% (A)
"Average" Setup = 30%
Best Driving Technique = 50%
Score = 80% (B)
I put "Best" and "Average" with quotes is because even those are relative terms. What is "best" for one driver might be "average" for another, which is why there is room in the market for a variety of cars such as the 2WD buggy market: B4, XXX-CR, RB5, Academy GV2, Bandit (they are decent cars), Duratrax Evader BX, Tamiya DT-02MS, and etc...

I just spent $2000 on my new losciated XX-B4 turbo carbon worlds edition, so I can bump up from novice and win the worlds.

For those of us mired in mediocrity the car vs driver question in a tough one.
I used to think after I got the right tires and team set up I was done, but, there are many other variables not reflected in the set up sheets that can make a difference.
I've given and taken my share of post race test drives and it seems like to the car itself makes the biggest difference. But the reason the car is so good is that the racer made it that way.

Some are stuck with the old vs new mentality that it is the car because the newer tech will overcome.
The only way that works is if the drivers are of similar ability.
You have to remember that the original poster asked if the cars would be competitive/great lap times. Not beat all that come before it.
As someone stated when you are a great driver you can take just about anything and make it look good.
Stick a club racer with a new generation car and a pro with a mid level or older car and who do you think will win? I put my money on the better driver.
The only way that works is if the drivers are of similar ability.

The best way I can explain it is you can give a GOOD DRIVER an AVERAGE set-up and he will still do good,BUT even if you give an AVERAGE DRIVER a PERFECT set-up he will still do only average. A car can only do as good as the skill of the driver allows it to do.But in the same token a driver can only push a car to the limits of it's performance capabilities. Unfortunately with today's cars I feel that most of us (myself included) are holding our cars back.

The driver makes the car. The technology in these cars really has changed that much, just look at the TC3. Many people can put this car in the winners circle at it was designed 10 years ago! A really bad car can hold back a good driver, but not much. The biggest advances have been in batteries, motors, tires, and radios.

good driving is good driving. but, at one point the technology will limit a driver of the greatest skill.
I can hang at the track with a stock T3.
Its mostly about your skill, and partly about the vehicle.

The other thing is, if you have a crap car, you will struggle to become a good driver. A good car will not slow your learning if you are NOT a good driver.
But, and this is the key, if you're not a good driver, and can't wrench, a B4 is Definitely a box of parts (as quoted earlier).

I am a perfect example for showing how having a nice vehicle doesn't mean you are going to run good.
My buggy is hooked up, it handles great, it takes jumps with ease, it's fast as all get out.
But I'll finish last most of the time because I can't drive worth a crap.
